Dalteline's done like 2-3 shows like this already participating on stings and luring people to a decoy house. The police were on-site to arrest the people after Dateline had a chance to confront em and splash em all over national TV.

They arrested run of the mill low-lives but also a doctor, teacher and even a rabbi.

I can't click the video (I'm at work), but one of these cases has already been thrown out of court. In that case, the person pretending to be the underage girl was actually 21 or so, and the court said someone agreeing to meet up with a 21 year old impersonating an underage person was not illegal.

The only option for an arrest to stick, would be for the cops to enlist underage girls to try to get guys to meet them. And that would be pretty fucking sick on the cops part, and I would hope illegal (endangering a minor, etc.).

I think these guys are scum, and the damage of being plastered on the news is probably worth it, but they are going about this wrong.

Dateline explained that the age of the person on the other end didn't matter. This was a police sting and just showing up showed intent to have sex with a minor.

They even said that all people that showed up were jailed and fined.

I may be mistaken, but in cases of pedophilia ( this obviously showing intent, which was made clear in the video by the announcer ) i don't believe it is neccessary to sign a release for it to be shown. Similar to the fact that once you commit a sex offense of the kind, you are publically known for it and can be found in various amount of ways. So i don't think a waiver had to be signed for this to be shown.

I believe if you have been charged with a crime it is legal. If no charges are filed then it is not without consent of the person. I don't remember who told me that though so I don't know for sure.

Not that I feel sorry for these guys, but isn't this a horrifying abuse of entrapment laws? Does anyone know where the line is drawn for that?

I think it's not entrapment because they wait for the guys to initiate the sex talk. Seems pretty analagous to having a female cop dressed up like a hooker and waiting for guys to approach them.

I just find the on-line chat hookup sting rather weak... if for no other reason than I think most teenage girls that want to cyber are probably middle-aged men who still live in their mom's basement. If one asked me to meet, or agreed to meet, I'd be assuming it's either a vigilante, a cop, or at best a middle-aged woman.
