Adult Proof Ring Tone

Post by Winnow »

I can't try this out myself until I get home tonight:

http://www.hardocp.com/news.html?news=MTk0OTUsLCwsLCwx
Adult Proof Ring Tone?

This story has been floating around for a week or two but this is the first time someone has actually provided a link

http://news.com.com/A+ring+tone+meant+t ... 82685.html

to the high frequency tone in question. I downloaded the high frequency noise and played it, every kid in the room could hear it but my wife couldn’t. Oddly enough, I could hear the sound just fine.

The cell phone ring tone that she heard was the offshoot of an invention called the Mosquito, developed last year by a Welsh security company to annoy teenagers and gratify adults, not the other way around. It was marketed as an ultrasonic teenager repellent, an ear-splitting 17-kilohertz buzzer designed to help shopkeepers disperse young people loitering in front of their stores while leaving adults unaffected.

I saw the news special on this, I kind of dismissed it as retarded. Why do kids need a secret adult proof ring tone anyway? There's this thing called silent or vibrate mode on phones... at least ones you could program ring tones into.

If I ever didn't want my parents to hear the phone ring w hen I was younger, I'd call the fuckin time and wait for the call to come and pick up the other line!

They need to do some more testing, I can hear it and I'm 44. I also played it for a guy here at work that is 48 and he could hear it. Funny though, he discribed it as a real low sound, kind of like brakes screaching. But I did confirm he could here it by turn it on and off and he responded correctly each time. To me it is a very high pitch, almost painful to listen to.

I was kind of worried when I saw the news special on it this morning and I couldn't hear the tone (I'm only 20), but I can hear the sound file in that link just fine. I suppose either the news broadcast was fucked or maybe the TV just sucks. Either way, I'm glad my ears aren't as damaged as I originally feared.

Yeah that is an annoying sound. My ears actually have a bit of discomfort (don't want to say pain but it's close) after listening to that. Of course I'm not over 40 either. Yet.

But yeah if you can't hear that you're definitely losing the ability to discern high pitches. I'd recommend turning down the iPod and looking into hearing protection when attending concerts.

I pass the test at 35 too.

Wonder if our hearing is good, or our sound cards are too shite to play the correct frequency.

I heard it no problem. I guess that's a good thing although that is a pretty annoying tone.

It's the same sound that they played in Beneath the Planet of the Apes!

I'm starting to wonder if it has something to do with cards/speakers as well - I linked it to both of my parents (they're in their late 40's) and they can hear it just fine.

People with normal hearing ability can't hear it after they are 50 and up. So they will need a school with only old teachers.

I was in the infantry, fired many weapons (M16 series, M60, 50 cal, Anti-Armor weapons and so on) without hearing protection, been around a LOT of loud noise for the entire time I was in the Army.

If anyone shouldn't be able to hear it I shouldn't, but I did and yes it was annoying.
