I picked the first option, but during those four weeks I'd also be busting my ass finding a new job. Then as soon as I found one, I'd tell my old boss to suck it and commence with the drinking

The answer here depends on how ambitious you are, and what your goals may be.
If I were given any direct indication that my job were on the line, I'd take it as a sign that, even if I did perform better in upcoming weeks, I'd still have pretty limited hope of advancement in the future. I'd start looking for a new job immediately. Secretly, at first, but you have to let someone know that you're shopping around elsewhere at least a month in advance.
If, on the other hand, you don't really care too much about advancement, then just bust your ass for this guy. If you're the hardest working person there, he can't fault you. He may not ever promote you, but he can't just up and fire you without a damned good excuse.

If I didn't have a wife, child (due in a few weeks), student loans, an apartment and car to pay for, then I would tell the boss to suck it. As it is I chose option #2 with the thought that I would be hunting for a new job anyhow. Besides, if they were going to fire me they'd have to do it in a fast orderly fashion so I can't sabotage the system or plant virus's in key areas (computer and otherwise
)

I'd go with number 2 my man (hey bro, havent seen you on lately). Reason being, he has a negative image of you that will be VERY hard to change. So even if you do 'better', you may only reach par of what he expects. And that negative shadow will likely remain. If you REALLY bust your ass, then you will have a better image, but if its a job you weren't hired to do anyway, then figure out if its what you want to do. I've never taken or needed unemployment, but life is what you make it, and what you take from it. So if the job you found isn't what you want (lets face it, if you're boss isnt happy, you're usually not either) then obviously you want something else anyway.
When layoffs were nailing IT hard, I knew I wouldn't get laid off....why? Cause its what I wanted...and I was right.
You said you enjoyed the time off, bar-b-ques and time at the beach, so going back to that wouldn't be bad
Oh yeah, and the strip clubs, you said you liked those OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS too. Take it easy man, you were always one of the coolest.

My thought would be none of the above.
Do what your boss wants, and start looking for another job.
I was hoping to get Force managed for quite a while, the severance was pretty sweet. No luck though. Things are picking back up lately, and I have new toys to play with again
Despite all the doom and gloom on the news, the job maket isn't that bad. At least not for what I do.

Most people are not gonna retire early and are not independantly wealthy. We will be working till we are 65, at least.
So, from that perspective you have 30-40 more years to work/find a career/job hop.
Sucks but hey, you can tell him to get bent. You still got time to find the right career. Lots and lots and lots of time...
