Sounds like something out of a cheesy B movie. Sadly, it wasn't.

Taping of Tennessee cops at some guy's house. He was suspected of drug use. The cops had the guy's wife and child leave while they questioned him. Before the wife left, she turned on a tape recorder in the kitchen. The cops beat the guy with bats, pistol whipped him, held loaded guns to his head, dunked his head in a toilet, burned him with lighters, etc. Eventually the recording made its way to the FBI.

The irony of waging a war on your own citizens never fails to amaze me.
"There is at least as much need to curb the cruel greed and arrogance of part of the world of capital, to curb the cruel greed and violence of part of the world of labor, as to check a cruel and unhealthy militarism in international relationships." -Theodore Roosevelt
This was from a couple weeks ago.
The premise was, it was common knowledge that this guy was dealing out of his house. Instead of taking the papers through the proper chain of command to get an offical signature for the warrant, they decided they were gonna make him sign over his right instead, which would be the same as having the warrant. They beat him, shock him, burn him, and just fuck him up in general. I can't recall as it is quite long, but I don't remember him ever signing it.
What Kelgar writes above is true as well, with the wife leaving and the recorder, etc.
I'm returning to hiding now. Just wanted to clear that up.

What if he wasn't actually a criminal? Would you feel bad then? Perhaps they were operating on faulty intelligence... nevermind, we know your stance on that one.Midnyte_Ragebringer wrote:I've never felt bad about a criminal getting the shit beat out of him by the cops. It's also a bit silly to quote "yourself" on your use of a proverb. Unless you thought you actually coined the term.

I'm sure you've heard people "claim" that everyone on the boards thinks you're a moron. Right now I'm supposing that you don't actually think you are a moron. "Common knowledge" would seem to be against that. If morons should get the shit kicked out of them, would you be comfortable accepting a beating just because people thought you deserved one? Or would you prefer they went through the appropriate channels and determined that you were deserving of punishment before meting out justice?
With the facts we have before us, I'm not sure how you can call any of this a "what are" other than the fact that some guy had his ass kicked, illegally. The cops in this situation played judge, jury and executioner. That's cool with you?

I'm sorry Sylvus. I can't work off of an example like that. It's not a crime to be a moron. So your example doesn't really work. I'monly for physical violence against people who hurt other people. In case you haven't gotten my stance on criminals, I REALLY hate criminals. It really bothers me when people hurt other people. So much so, I can't even enjoy a good horror movie anymore. I can't watch movies like Saw. My brother has told me what a killer movie that is, but I just can't watch any movie showing what evilness some people are capable of doing. Anyways, that's way off topic.Sylvus wrote:No, he was a "suspect". I assume your "what are" scenario is colored by what Truant said.Midnyte_Ragebringer wrote:But he was, right? Who the fuck are you to tell me I don't have the right to my opinion on criminals? huh? Why am I being persecuted for having a low tolerance for criminals? Odd don't you think? No, of course not.Nick wrote:Sorry Midnyte but who the fuck are you determine which life is "right"?
If you feel so pious about laws being upheld (which have fuck all to do with a morally "right" life) then why do you supporting your government break both national and international law?
Anywho. Holding a criminal accountable for his/her actions vs. holding an entire government accountable is quite the difference. Good luck with that one. People have been beating up Bush now for 6 years. His approval ratings are as low as possible. If you were to truly hold these people accountable, you'd never have anyone in office.

Clue time: he was at best a suspect. There was not enough evidence to get a search warrant so these cops broke the law to try and beat a confession out of him. This guy very well may have been dealing dope but the only evidence of criminal activity is the taped actions of these cops. For all you know the "everybody" that was giving these guys their info could have been the housewives who dropped by the station to give a couple BJs to buy another bottle of Jack, who made it up to sound more important than they are.Midnyte_Ragebringer wrote:Who the fuck are you to tell me I don't have the right to my opinion on criminals?

Fair enough, you lack the imagination for even the simplest of tasks. I was never suggesting that morons actually be beaten, and for my example the "givens" were that people thought you were a moron and that you weren't a moron. I thought you'd be able to make the logical leap from replacing "moron" in that example to "criminal". Please forgive my overestimation of your abilities.Midnyte_Ragebringer wrote:I'm sorry Sylvus. Nope, sorry. If that is what you menat you'd have asked me if I would feel the same way if I was that criminal. You didn't. And no I wouldn't. If I was a criminal I wouldn't have the opinions I have. I have these strong opinions because I am not of that ilk. I want people to be able to walk the streets and not worry for their safety. I want people to go to sleep and not worry someone might break into their house and steal from them or hurt them and/or their family. I think you get my point.

What is your stance on "innocent until proven guilty"? At any point, you could be picked up for whatever reason, with no proof, because you're suspected of a crime. THAT DOES NOT MAKE YOU A CRIMINAL. Were that to happen to you (bear with me, people, maybe I can trick him into answering), do you think that it's cool for cops to break down your door and beat the shit out of you until you agree to let them search your house? Apparently you do.
I have not said one way or the other, in this thread, whether I think it's cool to beat the shit out of criminals. Feel free to review some of my other posts if you want to know my stance on that, that's irrelevant to the current discussion. That's not even the discussion at hand. If you can't tell, you're saying that it's cool to beat a suspect, which even someone like yourself who has never done anything wrong since he was born can become at any point of any day. All it takes is someone seeing you or someone who looks like you in the wrong place at the wrong time.
But you're cool with that, right?

No one has the right to beat the crap out of you in America. Everyone has the right to due process. In this case the cops were way out of line and I hope they get fucked. It doesn't matter whether the guy was Charles Manson or Jesus, cops cannot be allowed to do this. It is exactly this reason why so many cops are despised and feared by the public at large. A person can be completely innocent but I bet their heart rate still goes up when they drive by a cop sitting on the road. It has nothing to do with a guilty or not-guilty conscience. It has to do with the fact that government forces have been abusing their powers for years and it is only getting worse.
When I was 18 and living in a small town, I got stopped or followed at least once a week by the local Barney Fife. If I had someone that wasn't recognized in the car then I was assured of being stopped. My only crime was that I was related to a hoodlum and that I wasn't a native of the town. I never committed any crimes. Hell I could barely afford gas, I surely wouldn't be toting drugs around.
Now not all cops are dirty but it only takes a fraction to ruin the reps of the rest. They are under-paid and forced to tackle issues that they shouldn't like busting pot smokers. They have also lost touch with the society they serve. When I was a kid(80s) they would quite often come to my school and talk to kids, bring their dogs, etc. Later they would come and unlock you door if you shut your keys inside the car. That is good public relations and they don't have it anymore. Nowadays, most cops earn barely enough to be considered above the poverty line. I saw a recent add in my towna nd they were only paying $12-15 per hour. What kind of recruits you going to get with that kind of pay???
On top of this they are forced to supplement the department by writing out as many tickets as they possibly can. Most departments set their budget on this income. In the old days, you would get a warning before a ticket. They don't give out warnings anymore and even if you can talk the court down on the charge, you will still pay the full amount.
