How was Monday?
I heard that across our state and supposedly across the states that there was shut down of services from the hispanic community. They wanted to show what would happen if all the hispanic illegals were to not be available. Personally I probably won't notice anything. My job doesn't have a lot of potential hispanic illegals around. (just no way to make that sound good.)
So if this works for them how long before we have an African Amerian walk out for a day? Irish Americans walk out for a day? and so on.

We were pressed for time and tried to hit up McDonalds, the line was incredibly long in the drive through so we parked to go inside and a sign was posted saying something along the lines of "Due to the demonstrations planned our workforce is greatly reduced, so our lobby is closed, use the drive through!"
Then we decided to try jackinthebox, but they closed early (2 PM) so we ended up hitting Arby's with it's staff of fresh-faced caucasian high-school students. YAY! THEY HAVE CRIPPLED FAST FOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those damn trucks hauling homemade open metal trailors with gardening equipment and mexicans in them that stare at you as they sit backwards, hold up traffic on the highways all the time.Voronwë wrote:Traffic was a breeze.

As a follow up, I was reading a lot of stories and reports about what was affected.
Of the immediately noticeable, and impacting the average person. Fast Food was understaffed and was forced to run drive thru only, or closed. Regular restaurants didn't report any trouble as the just rescheduled other workers to cover.
It's all speculation as to what, if any, impact was made in the agriculture (produce) market. It would take at least two to three days before you would even notice any change in supply, so it's really impossible to tell.
The most affected business were those that were owned/operated by mexicans, generally in mexican communities. This really struck me as odd, as (in general) the only people those places serve, are mexican americans and immigrants living in those communities. So in my demented little mind, it seems they inconvenienced themselves more than anything.
I don't have links, but it's all over the news sites if you just click a couple times

....and this morning, my commute was held up by a truck driver who didn't cut his right turn wide enough, and scrapped his truck on the light pole. Was the driver mexican? Yes! That's it, deport them!!!
If everyone who was an illegal alien left the US tomorrow, there would not be a single person affected that I give a damn about.
The 2party Pukes want to legalize illegals just want to shore up Social Security since the dumbfucks raided it for 40 years and cannot figure out how to fix it without pissing off more than 49% of the voters.

So all this little demonstration did was show us how much they clog up our roads, and how little they really affect our lives.
LET THE DEPORTATIONS BEGIN!

We have a lot of hispanic people working for us (legally) and we worked with them in advance to be able to attend the protests (they just took a PTO day).
American businesses are the biggest supporters of immigration reform and they all recognize that we will do whatever we can to help this cause. In short, we were able to plan around it, but they are an important part of our daily work effort.

This isn't a hispanic issue. This is a Mexican issue. Hispanic != mexican.Avestan wrote:We have a lot of hispanic people working for us (legally) and we worked with them in advance to be able to attend the protests (they just took a PTO day).

Um, no, it is not a Mexican issue. Many of the people crossing the southern border crossed all the way through Mexico from Central and South America to get here. Just because they enter from Mexico does not mean they come from Mexico.

The Cubans here didn't seem to sympathetic, and all of them showed up for work.

Cubans and Mexicans are like oil and water. And though I was lucky enough not to have made the mistake, I pity the fool that calls a cuban a mexican.

Illegal Immigrants Returning To Mexico For American Jobs
May 3, 2006 | Issue 42•18
MEXICO CITY—As dozens of major American corporations continue to move their manufacturing operations to Mexico, waves of job-seeking Mexican immigrants to the United States have begun making the deadly journey back across the border in search of better-paying Mexican-based American jobs.
"I came to this country seeking the job I sought when I first left this country," said Anuncio Reyes, 22, an undocumented worker who recrossed the U.S. border into Mexico last month, three years after leaving Mexico for the United States to work as an agricultural day laborer. "I spent everything I had to get back here. Yes, it was dangerous, and I miss my home. But as much as I love America, I have to go where the best American jobs are."

They clogged the fuck out of streets downtown, but so do the fur protestors on Saturdays...nobody really gave a shit here, much less anywhere else. The whole deal was pointless and even the more liberal folks basically wrote the protest off. I can picture the PETA faithful shrugging while muttering, "amateurs", and polishing their "Salmon Have Feelings" lapel pins.
The biggest and certainly dumbest move by many protestors was the whole thing with disrespecting the US flag while proudly waving other flags, such as Mexico.
Were they trying to lose support from US citizens on purpose, or was that just a series of 'oopsies'? I was pretty much ok with trying to blend current illegals in at first--to the point of allowing them some sort of abbreviated immigration 'workshop' or whatever.
Now that I witnessed so much asshattery, I am pretty much pro-deportation. I mean hell, they make even PETA people sound almost logical or rational after that pathetic display of ignorance.
On a side note, nice job of "Our Current Administration" pussing out when they totally had a chance to do the 'I told ya so'. Fucking gutless simps.
Anyways, nice job protest...

Nothign was affected around my area. It is a small city but usually the students get riled up over this stuff.
The issue itself is a no win situation that is jsut being used by politicians to sway voters one way or teh other. It is also something new for the media to sink its teeth into. Everyone is tired of Iraq and Katrina news.
I have no real opinion myself. I can see both sides and argue both sides. One side says they do jobs Americans won't do but if the companies paid a decent wage then they would get Americans to do them. All the Lawn maintenance companies in my area seem predominately white. The restaurants are definitely loaded with illegals though.
Right now it would be near impossible to deport 11 million people. If we legalized them all then 11 million more would show up to take their place. We really need a stronger border to stop the flood. We also need to make Mexico do something on their side of the border.

I don't agree with Bill O very much anymore, but he interviewed a Mexican government official a couple months ago, and asked him WHY the situation in Mexico was so bad. The official was even more worthless than ours are.Deward wrote:We also need to make Mexico do something on their side of the border.
But seriously, I think this whole Mexico thing is just more of America's chickens coming home to roost. Back in the late 1800's Mexico was every bit as powerful as America. Then we fought a couple wars, funded Pancho Villa's little rebellion, destabilized all the countries surrounding them, and so here we are today. Mexico's gov't is corrupt and ineffective at every level, their people are ignorant, their public infrastructure almost non-existant.
I think we need to quit mucking about in the Mid East, and do some liberatin' here in our own hemisphere. Mexico first, then CANADA!
