NFL DRAFT
Looks like the old thread was a victim of board troubles.
Ted Thompson of the Packers has been one of the most closed mouthed people as far as giving any tangible information on his strategy for the draft I have ever seen. I must say that I like it. Keep them guessing. Keep them ALL guessing.
Passing on Arrington was a good thing imho because for the money he was asking for he had better be the second coming of Laurence Taylor. Instead he is just the second coming of himself only at a higher price tag.
Now if we get offered a trade during the draft we don't have to scramble to make ends meet. We can sit back and analyze the deals much closer. We are in a great position right now. If Veron Davis isn't available at the 5 spot then I hope we trade down to get an extra first round pick plus bonus.

Has little Brett decided what he's going to do yet? IMO, you chumps need to draft a QB, either way. Brett is so fucking far past his prime it's almost sad. I wonder how many times he'll cry this season (if he plays)?

And another thing: Lendale White showing up fat and flabby to the USC pro day was the biggest mistake of his young life. There are so many teams looking for a power back, and he was clearly tops in that area at the end of the NCAA season.

Brett Favre needs to go. I'll dredge up the "I hate Brett Favre" thread if it hasn't been wiped out due to board problems!
I'm looking forward to the draft. I'm fired up again for Arizona Cardinal football! No really, they should be better this year. : ) The Cardinals were picked to take the division last year and then we lost Rolle (great first round CB) and lost Boldin for 4-5 games, and two or three of our key defensive players. They will all be back, we've made some good moves in Free Agency...and while I'm not an Edge fan, I think he'll do ok here and help.
We've got the best stadium in the NFL opening this year, the 10th pick in the draft to add, and we actually get two home games to open the season (first year since the Cardinals arrived in 1988 that they get a any home games in the first and second week of the season), and we get a Monday Night Football game vs S.F. which should be an easy win.
I'm being bold and saying the Cardinals go 9-7!

USA Today has a very nice flash sortable draft list.

nice way to compare some players.

Granted Lendale White cost himself some initial money and top 15 draft status......but then again maybe it was an incredibly smart move. If you could gain 6 pounds and put on a shitty performance in hopes you would slide DOWN in the draft and land with a team that can win, wouldn;t you consider it? Lets say he used that as a draft ploy to land with a good team......say New England or Pittsburgh and becomes the next Jerome Bettis.....then who cares that he gave up a couple million at the onset of his career?

I was reading the recap of Bill Simmons' chat from yesterday, I found this to be pretty funny.
Matt (Long Island): Is there some way we can get Matt Millen to draft Chad Jackson or Santonio Holmes? It would easily climb into the top 10 funniest moments in sports history, particularly the 60 seconds of silence from the ESPN roundtable before Mel Kiper tries to reason the pick with "Jackson, interesting choice: Great hands, blazing 40 time, we've seen his stock climb since the combine..."
Bill Simmons: (2:38 PM ET) We're all rooting for this. I think it would be the ballsiest move in the history of GM's -- he's going to get fired, anyway. Why not?

I agree with his assessment of Leinart. Everyone agrees that he's not the ideal physical specimen, but they hype his decision making. It's very easy to choose when all of your targets are bigger and/or faster than the guys covering them. I didn't see anything either this season or during his Heisman year that made me believe he's anything but a career backup.
Vince Young on the other hand, made a believer out of me in the Rose Bowl. He took what the defense offered, and made them pay dearly everytime they left him room to breathe. That is exactly the kind of discipline and judgement that QBs in the NFL need. Combine that with awesome speed, size, and a cannon of an arm, and I see big things in his future. Forget all the criticism about his less than perfect throwing motion. IMO, that only matters if the guy is too damn short to see over the line (see Rex Grossman).

I see broken legs in his future and a few seperated shoulders before he becomes like eagle quarterback we will not name. edit to add, I am not saying Matt is anything like Joe, just that physical stats (other then you need to be 6'1" with todays linemen) mean less to me then how you think on the field

I recall a dragt 2 years ago where the top 2 guys got all the hype and the better QB was not going to go ahead of them no matter what. He slid all the way down to 11 and has set several records in getting to the AFC title game his first year and winning the Super Bowl in his second. If a GM actually had balls, they would draft Cutler ahead of the other 2 clowns. I think I would even take Bruce Gradkowski ahead of Leinart.
The Cardinals may take Cutler with the 10th pick. Coach Green claims to love 10 players in this draft so is happy to stay in that spot. We'll see.Kilmoll the Sexy wrote:If a GM actually had balls, they would draft Cutler ahead of the other 2 clowns. I think I would even take Bruce Gradkowski ahead of Leinart.
Young is highly overrated. The system he ran at UT was extremely simple. No check-offs. No identifying coverages. He had one receiver before the snap and he went with that or ran. He throws a poor deep ball, has a funky as hell delivery and once his knee is blown out once he'll be done. I do not see Young as a future star in NFL whatsoever.
Leinart.. I am torn on him. I think he is the QB that is most ready to start right away. Yes he had superior talent around him, but he DID run a pro style offense. And he ran it well. He checks off very well as well. He does not have a very strong arm (but neither do certain top NFL QBs) and is honestly a bit unproven. Especially in tough games. I have a feeling Leinart will be an either-or. Either he will be a superstar type Brady, or he will be a career backup.
Cutler.. overhyped. He was decent at Vanderbilt but not spectacular. I would not compare him to Rothlisberger whatsoever. Strong arm, tough and used to taking hits. But.. I just don't see him as all that.
I actually have a feeling that the team who goes for QBs in the second/third round might be the most successful.

I am still saying Gradkowski from Toledo may be the best QB in the entire draft. The MAC just has a way of producing good QB's. If Pennington gets his shoulder fixed, there will be 4 starting QB's in the NFL this year out of the MAC.....which is truly a lot from one conference. Omar Jacobs is another one with Leftwich type potential....somehow he has really slipped off everyone's radar.
Leinart will be a bust. He has the arm of Ryan Leaf and is a party guy. He will be another of those career bouncing around bums who end up with shitty teams that bring 5 guys like him into camp every year to try and scrape by until they draft someone decent.

Brittle Croyle needs to put on about 20-30 pounds if he wants to survive the NFL. He was VERY injury prone at Bama, and while SEC defenses are generally good, they still cannot compare to the speed and ferocity of real pros.

omar jacobs will be a beast later in his career i think.
on an earlier point (its been brought up plenty at my school/work), carson palmer will be a much better qb than leinart, hands down. leinart had way more weapons to use than palmer, not to mention white/bush keeping the defense from using a lot of pass rushing. i hear all this about his decision making, with the receivers and tailbacks he had around him, he would have been hard pressed to make a bad decision on throwing.

The texans announced they made the smartest move they could have for their franchise...
They reached agreement with Mario Williams DE
Gratz a 12 time pro bowler instead of a running back whose average shelf life is 5 years.
Great move but they will get endless shit

If Domanic Davis can stay healthy then this was a good pick. I don't think he will. Not to mention Mario Williams wasn't really stable at a high level. He was very very good as the season went on though but definitely started slow.Pherr the Dorf wrote:The texans announced they made the smartest move they could have for their franchise...

I have always been a supporter of the idea that defense is very important but.. Bush is special. And whether we like it or not, it is about money. And Bush is a hell of a lot more marketable than Williams.
At the very least this means the first 10 picks tomorrow will be a hell of a lot more interesting.
Yeah, I saw that thread.
Just the start of the playoffs so not going to be much speculation. I'm going to go with Red Wings though for the Stanley Cup.

Laurence Maroney vs. Penn State: 16 carries, 48 yards. Outcome: 44-14 loss.he was a bruising runner for minnesota. he even ran all over OSU and PSU.

saying football has the same problems as basketball and baseball is moronic to say the least. i guess you must have missed all the collective bargaining agreements earlier this year that will add to the longevity that the nfl has to offer. then again, judging by your stupid comments, i highly doubt it.

I have no respect for any of those sports.
Because Hockey doesnt have its share of problems. Since hockey is the only sport you watched in the last 10 years how was it last year? You know, because it isnt about the money

I'm happy with the Cardinal's picks so far. QB Matt Leinart, USC can sit behind Kurt Warner for a year, and probably play a little as well, while he learns the offence. Kurt is known for being a good mentor type and has always been helpful even through all the QB controversy last year. I like this pick a lot. Leinart isn't going to be able to perform like an monkey athletically but is solid all around. That's no knock on Vince Young though. I would have liked him too.
Second round pick was also a good one. USC tackle, Taitusi Lutui. He's a 365 pounder. The Cardinals sucked ass run blocking last year. Lutui is going to be dominant run blocking to help Edge but may hurt pass blocking on the outside a little...that's ok, we need Warner to get injured at some point for Leinart to take over. It's all very well planned out!
Third round, the Cardinals took 6'7" TE Leonard Pope out of Georgia. I really wanted Vernon Davis in the first round but Pope's draft analysis shows him at 250 lbs with the frame to add 20 more pounds and is the tallest receiver out there. Admittedly, I don't know more than what I read in the analysis but from that, he looks like a bruising type player, able to catch in traffic at 6'7", that's going to complete the impressive pasing attack that AZ has with Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald as the WR's and Edge in the backfield.
Gotta like things so far! Great QB for the future and probably best prepared under Pete Caroll at USC to stat if needed this year...added to the O line to help the run attack...added the final receiving piece (we've had shitty TE's for awhile now) to even out the passing attack...Warner, and eventually Leinart, will be posting huge numbers soon.
No defensive players yet, but last year, we lost Antrell Rolle, 5th pick CB to iunjury early on but he was looking fantastic and is back this year, and 2-3 of our starters early ini the season last year so our defence is actually much bettter than it showed last year. I'm sure we'll pick up a safefy in the 4th or 5th round tomorrow.
