Report: 'Star Trek' set for '08 revival
Variety: J.J. Abrams to take the helm
LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- More than three years after the last "Star Trek" movie crashed at the box office, the venerable sci-fi franchise is being revived by the director of the upcoming "Mission: Impossible" sequel, Daily Variety reported in its Friday edition.
The as-yet-untitled "Star Trek" feature, the 11th since 1979, is aiming for a fall 2008 release through Paramount Pictures, the Viacom Inc. unit looking to restore its box-office luster under new management, the trade paper said.
The project will be directed by J.J. Abrams, whose Tom Cruise vehicle "Mission: Impossible III" will be released by Paramount on May 5. Abrams, famed for producing the TV shows "Alias" and "Lost," will also help write and produce.
Daily Variety said the action would center on the early days of "Star Trek" characters James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and first outer-space mission.
The paper described "Star Trek" as Hollywood's most durable performer after James Bond, spawning 10 features that have grossed more than $1 billion and 726 TV episodes from six series.
The 10th film, "Star Trek: Nemesis," bombed at the box office on its December 2002 release, earning just $43 million in North America. Last year, Viacom-owned broadcast network UPN pulled the plug on the low-rated series "Star Trek: Enterprise" following a four-season run.

New Star Trek Movie for 2008
The original Star Trek crew movies were the best. Going back to the pre TV series days of the academy might make for an interesting movie. I wonder who they'll get to play Kirk and Spock.

No fucking shit. I was always immediately sold by Borg. Oh man, I remember one movie where the preview showed Picard all bourgeoise (GET IT!?!!?!?!), and I couldn't wait.Deward wrote:I personally liked Next Generation a lot more than the original series. Hell I liked Voyager more too. I think a "flashback" movie is stupid. If they want to sell tickets then have them bring in the Borg again. It is always a good money maker. I love the Borg episodes.

Syenye, the even-odd theory no longer holds up after the trainwreck that was Star Trek 10: Nemesis. For those that don't know, there was a long held belief that all the odd-numbered movies blew ass, whereas the even numbered were good flicks. 10 changed that.
I don't put much stock into the even-odd theory, as I've liked many of the old numbered movies, including Generations and Search For Spock.

Star Trek XI: The Quest For Cash
I really hope it does well. The original series was magic for me. Sure, I was born in the late 60's...so all I had was reruns....but I could whoop anyone's butt at Star Trek trivia back in the day. Hell, I was even a Trekkie...attending conventions and such.
I enjoyed ST:TNG (after Tasha was killed off and Riker grew a beard!). I really enjoyed DS9...great writing.
We need a movie featuring Garak...and his journey from Cardassian agent for the Obsidian Order to mild mannered tailor

I really am curious as to who will play the roles of Kirk and Spock....talk about tough shoes to fill....Shatner and Nimoy are cultural icons because of those roles.

Have they hired competent writers for this one?
"There is at least as much need to curb the cruel greed and arrogance of part of the world of capital, to curb the cruel greed and violence of part of the world of labor, as to check a cruel and unhealthy militarism in international relationships." -Theodore Roosevelt
Looks like they're getting fresh blood to produce this next movie which is a good thing:masteen wrote:Have they hired competent writers for this one?
No Berman for Trek XI
And Abrams clarifies prequel buzz.
by Paul Davidson and Stax
April 25, 2006 - Variety reported last week that Paramount Pictures had set J.J. Abrams (M:i:III, Lost) to produce and direct the eleventh Star Trek movie, which they claimed would focus on the early days of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock. But now Abrams tells Empire Online that the report was somewhat inaccurate.
"The whole thing was reported entirely without our cooperation," Abrams revealed. "People learned that I was producing a Star Trek film, that I had an option to direct it, they hear rumours of what the thing was going to be and ran with a story that is not entirely accurate."
Although Abrams refused to reveal specifics about his new plot, it MIGHT not necessarily revolve around Kirk and Spock but would take place during their era. (IGN recently learned that Oscar winner Phillip Seymour Hoffman had expressed his interest to Abrams in playing a ship's doctor.) "Those characters [Kirk and Spock] are so spectacular. I just think that," Abrams said, "they could live again."
Perhaps the biggest thing Paramount has going for it, though, is its complete abandonment of Star Trek's old guard. The announcement of the eleventh Trek film made no mention of Rick Berman, the producer who has exercised control over both the movies and the various TV shows for some 15 years. It has now been confirmed that Berman is not involved with the new movie in any way. Abrams is taking on the same responsibilities that Berman held.
A large portion of Star Trek fans have long held Berman and co-producer Brennan Braga responsible for the ongoing decline of the franchise, demonstrated notably in the failures of Enterprise and Star Trek: Nemesis. Braga finally called it quits last fall, and now Berman has apparently been forcibly retired from Trek. "Rick Berman is not involved in any way," a Paramount representative told Sci Fi Wire, even though Berman has been working with his own people on a Star Trek prequel for several months.
While fan response remains mixed to the idea of a prequel, Trekweb reports that George Takei, who manned the helm on Kirk's Enterprise, is enthusiastic about the prequel. "This is a startling new development for the Star Trek franchise and I am very excited about the news. … I wonder what Sulu would have been up to in those early days at Starfleet Academy?"
Star Trek XI could be a new beginning for the franchise in both television and films. But is Abrams interested and willing to be the permanent new boss of Trek?
Picts of Hoffman if you don't know who he is:Hoffman tipped for Star Trek role
Oscar winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman is apparently being tipped by director JJ Abrams for a role in his upcoming film 'Star Trek 11'.
Abrams recently completed work on the Tom Cruise sequel 'Mission: Impossible III' and is keen to start production of the 'Star Trek' adaptation as soon as possible.
According to IGN FilmForce, Hoffman is being considered for a role as the ship's doctor in the film after impressing Abrams with his villainous role in 'M: I 3'.
'Star Trek 11' will be produced and directed by Abrams and will be based on the events of the hit TV series' 'Enterprise'.

I'm trying to get someone to watch my girls on Saturday so I can catch this at the Imax. The reviews have been great so far. I'm actually excited about a Star Trek movie!

Re: New Star Trek Movie for 2008
It's funny to see opinions change. I never really cared about star trek (2 & 4 movies aside), cared even less about next gen even though a couple of college roomates watched it regularly on a UHF channel that escapes me at the moment. But I would be interested in seeing this, even in the theatre, which I rarely do any longer. I'm not going to miss a well rated actionish movie in the theatre, like I did w/ iron man, again.

Funny you mention that. One of the reviews I read said Star Trek is this year's Iron Man.Chidoro wrote:It's funny to see opinions change. Re: New Star Trek Movie for 2008
I was happy to see that this movie was getting good reviews from friends and critics. It gave me a good excuse to go to a theatre for the first time in a while...and I'm very glad I shelled out the cash for this The visual and sound effects are amazing...it's non-stop action the whole way through. It's very intense, but also never takes itself too seriously and has plenty of quality comic relief. I'd recommend seeing it in theatres- I can't imagine it being as good on a small screen with lower sound quality.
Re: New Star Trek Movie for 2008
Saw it at an imax theatre here in dc...shit this movie was good. That's one of the best space scifi movies I've ever seen. Well written, good motives for the cast in the script, the antagonist isn't some far fetched megalomaniac...he was you, or me, or any of us.
Felt it may have had a little too many nuggets/references in the movie for fans of the previous works with this crew, which is fine to me and all the others that get them, but for people who don't know star trek, its probably not gonna work as well for those folks who don't know the "other side" of those jokes.

It was a great movie if you aren't a Trekkie.
It was a great movie if you are a Trekkie who is happy other people are going to see it for the first time.
It was a shitty movie if you are a Trekkie who loves the lore of the show and the meaning behind it.
It was a decent movie if you are a Trekkie with no real investment in the lore of the show.
That should about cover the bases.

loved it....
Although, I think my GF will leave me if I ever take her to a scifi movie premier again. I really think that some of the people there hadnt seen sunlight in years... I did see it in IMAX though... and I was pretty disappointed, this movie was not filmed in IMAX, so it was just shown on a big screen with really loud sound effects. The watchmen was amaxing in IMAX.

I think Watchmen was simply upscaled to fit IMAX and not filmed in IMAX. Even The Dark Knight only had select scenes that were shot with an IMAX camera.Ransure wrote:loved it....

Re: New Star Trek Movie for 2008
Best Start Trek movie ever. This movie rocked all all levels.
New Kirk: Excellent!
New Spock: Excellent!
New Scottie: Like the actor, not too bad in this role.
Sulu: good job
Uhura: Excellent!
Pike: Excellent!
Screw the "lore" of Star Trek. This movie was hella entertaining. I like all the changes.
1. Star Trek (2009)
2. Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan (would have no problem rating this as the best Trek movie)
3. Start Trek IV: Voyage Home
Everything Else
I like that they didnt try and go all super sci fi. I like the more recognizable Earth in this movie.

Re: New Star Trek Movie for 2008
I enjoyed the movie overall, but there are a few nitpicking/nerd_minor_rage? things...
Spoilering just incase, because like I said, I liked the movie and don't want to ruin the experience of anyone else...
As a person who enjoyed most of the original series (granted I was a kid so almost anything "in space" was cool to me) and TNG show/movies, I enjoyed this movie. I think, as has probably been said already in this thread, people who aren't that into Star Trek would enjoy this as an Action/Sci-Fi movie. There were certainly some inside jokes people who have watched the old shows/movies will get and those who haven't won't, but they don't beat you over the head with them. Thoroughly enjoyed the acting in this movie and thought it was pretty fucking refreshing to a lot of the movies I've been seeing in the last year.
I may end up seeing this more than once in the theater, wife fell asleep (she's pregnant, she's allowed to!).

As our group was getting ready to go inside to watch the film I had to stop and wonder. How many computer systems/networks were going untended on Friday afternoon. All the IT geeks were at the movie.
