Panasonic TH-50PX60U - 50" Plasma - Yes or No
VV'ers - help me help myself.
I can get a sweet deal on the new Panasonic TH-50PX60Uplasma.
For around $3K are you going to find a better set on the market now?
Thank you for your input.
I have a room that gets a lot of natural light, and i want wide viewing angles. I'm not married to a wall-mounted flat panel, but the first two things point me in that direction.
2 HDMI inputs, has a tuner so i can hook OTA antenna, etc.
Thanks for any thoughts.

if you absolutely have to have a plasma then go for it. panasonic are making the best price->quality plasma sets on the market these days.
but unless you are going to mount it on your wall, there is no reason to get a plasma over a DLP. plasma has too many downsides and basically no advantages (other than width) over a DLP. you can get a 50" DLP for almost half that price from a company like Sony, Samsung or LG.

The one major advantage of plasma over DLPs is viewing angle. It's no contest. If you don't need to see the TV from an angle (examples being a TV in the Family room while viewable from the kitchen at an angle, or a counter/bar off to the side of a living room or family room.) then DLP rear projection TVs are ok.
The best thing to do is to take note of the possible viewing angles your TV will have and then go to a store and see how the picture is at that angle. (up and down as well as side to side)

How "kid-proof" are LCD and plasma screens? Like when ranger jr drives his Tonka truck with it's peanut butter and sand encrusted wheels around the screen while watching Bob the Builder or what have you?
I'd be pretty hesitant with little kids around if it didn't have a glass or other very scratch resistant faceplate. No matter how high you mount it. Even the best kids do some remarkably silly stuff on occasion.

most LCDs are not so good for having people drive toy trucks into them hah.Aabidano wrote:How "kid-proof" are LCD and plasma screens? Like when ranger jr drives his Tonka truck with it's peanut butter and sand encrusted wheels around the screen while watching Bob the Builder or what have you?

sony is comming out with a sweet 1080P LCD flat panel line around august that will in fact have a Glass cover over the screen, they look hot and are an upgrade to the current KDLV40XBR, 32XBR, and a new 46" XBR yet to be announced. these sets should be around the current price point or slightly more than the current XBR Bravia line. This set will take to children beatings better as well.
viewing angle isnt nearly an issue with DLP's (especially this generation) as standard RPTV's. I strongly encourage you to at least check them out (preferrably side by side) before making the purchase.
we own two plasma tv's and one DLP. I actually prefer the DLP for gaming on and have swapped it into my office for the plasma my husband got me for my birthday last year. it's not on a pefect angle with where I sit at my desk and I can still see the picture fine without moving over to the sofa in here. if I look at it at an extreme angle it does white out a lot, but so does plasma.
it sounds like I'm trying to talk you out of it, but I'm not. it's just the price per screen size on DLP is so much less right now with a lot more upsides than downsides.
