Night Watch / Day Watch

Post by Aslanna »

I watched these two movies over the weekend. They are Russian made with, of course, Russian dialogue. The versions I had contained English subtitles so it wasn't that bad. Anyway, the basic plot is:
The plot echoes the classic theme of supernatural beings conducting a secret war behind the curtain of human history, as seen in films such as Highlander (1986), Blade (1998) and Underworld (2003). In Night Watch, this secret war opposes two different kinds of vampires: the Forces of Light and the Forces of the Dark. Centuries ago, a truce put an end to the open war that had been raging between the two forces. According to this truce, the Forces of Light would secretly rule the daytime, while the Forces of the Dark would be free to roam at night. Ever since, “Watchers” with special powers have been monitoring the activity of the other side, trying to interfere with its schemes to seize complete power…
I'm not a big fan of the 'vampire' genre. Fortunately this movie isn't the traditional vampire type movie like Blade with lots of neck biting, blood sucking and wooden stakes. The vampire theme isn't really the main focus of the movie.

Day Watch is the sequel in the Watch trilogy and came out this year in Russia. Fox Searchlight apparently bought the rights and Night Watch opened recently in US theatres. But from reading it sounds like they cut out some stuff and generally fucked it up in traditional Fox fashion. It does have cool subtitles though that have been described as 'revolutionary'. I haven't seen them myself so not sure how true that is. Unfortunately, rumor has it that Fox is recasting the third movie and it will be shot in English so you'll have all new actors. That's a bit lame. That's like Return of the King having a whole new cast. But still to early to know exactly what they'll be doing.

Reviews seem a bit mixed on these two movies, but I generally enjoyed them even though I was a bit lost at times. They seem to mix a lot of elements and overall do a good job at it.

8/10. Probably more towards 7.5 but I like to round up. It's better than Matrix, anyway!

(Nochnoy Dozor and Dnevnoy Dozor are the Russian titles)

I like "supernatural beings conducting a secret war behind the curtain of human history" themed movies so will give them a try sometime.

While I haven't seen Night Watch yet (but have heard good things about it), that does sound incredibly lame.

Erm, it's not the "station" that is doing it, it's the studio. As in 20th Century Fox. Yeah, basically the same thing, but basically not either.

Well the story line that was started in Night Watch was resolved in the sequel. So I guess technically the next movie doesn't have to have the same characters. I haven't read the novels which were the (loose) basis for the movies, since they are probably in Russian, so I'm not exactly sure what the third movie would be about. So there's a chance they wont muck it up as much as people think. But this is Fox we're talking about so... Eh. I just don't think it's something that needs to be 'Americanized'.

This can be settled in a quick "fuck fox".

Nightwatch, the only one I've seen, was really good though.
