i need a new HDTV TT

i need a flat panel HDTV. no projectors, the room has too much natural lighting. it's going above a fireplace, but the apartment complex doesn't want me to mount it on the wall, so something with a decent stand. i'm looking for something between 37" and 42", and i'd like to keep it under $3000. any suggestions? any insight into plasma vs lcd?

Sony XBR LCD 40".... should be $3150 or so wherever you go...

Best bang for the buck on the market...

I dare say this wouldn't be advisable in winter... but if they'll warranty the device to work in temps well above 100F maybe it'll be ok.

i'm not allowed to play with fire anyway! my fireplace is purely for decoration, as i'm way too lazy to use it.

and thanks for the suggestion ransure... any thoughts on other brands? i really like my sony rear projection, but one of my friends just randomly stopped working. what about plasma brands?

I bought a Panasonic 42" plasma about 6 months ago (it's not HD, which was a big mistake) and my dad got the Sony 40" XBR that Ransure mentioned almost 4 months ago now. The feature set on his TV far and away blows mine out of the water.

The picture clarity is amazing compared to my television. My plasma is EDTV (852x480) while his is HDTV (1366x768). The only complains I have about the Sony is that there is no DVI input. I had to hook my DVR up through his PC (VGA) input but even then it provided a much better picture when compared to being hooked up on mine through DVI.

Another thing worth mentioning is that the LCD pulls far less power than my plasma does. (240W vs. 450W)

If I had to do it again I would definitely pay the extra $1000 for the Sony. I don't think there is a model out there now that even comes close to the XBR in terms of features and customizability.

Yes you can... there are 2 HDMI ports on the Sony XBR LCD and one can be used for PC input.

Sye, dont let your friends experiance turn you away(any peice of electronics can crap out on you, the XBR has a 2 year warranty out of the box)... if you wanted to look at a plasma, check out the pioneer's or the panasonics... but right now your looking at the end of a few model years... neither of them has a comparable picture for 3k. Samsung has a 3k plasma, but again, its not as good as the XBR.

Stay away from phillips, magnavox, rca, toshiba, hitatchi, ect... they are all rebadging someone elses crap.

Oh, and about the fireplace comment... I have never met a fireplace that I cant hang a TV over... I do it OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS. When people first started designing fireplaces... the reason for the mantle was to deflect the heat from a peice of art above the fireplace (much more delicate than your plasma).... if there is no mantle on a gas/electric fireplace, that means it vents heat through the bottom and either has a blower or forced air system.

the 42" Panasonic Plasma HDTV got the Consumer Reports Best buy.

It sells for around $2700, but they all (Best Buy, etc) always say "regular price $3K" and then act like it is on sale.

i should have purchased one in September, we had an employee deal w/ Panasonic and i could have gotten it delivered and mounted on my wall for $2300.

oh well.

and i believe every word Ransure says

The Panasonic Plasma HDTVs have better reveiws than any other Plasmas out there atm. I have been doing a lot of reseach on plasmas because I plan on getting one soon. I was looking a the 50" Panasonic.

Doesn't deflect it all though, I've seen people leave plants on a mantle with an oil heater and they clearly suffered, so the temp up there was a good bit more than 100F. YMMV though, and I have no clue what the operating range for plasma TVs is anyway

If you put a pany and a pioneer side by side with an HDTV source... you would be hard pressed to pick a winner....

The Pioneer shines on anything less than a perfect input... the reason for the stand alone video processor is to make standard TV look incredible...

On analog... a panny vs a pioneer is a no brainer.. the panny looks like ass, the pioneer looks like pure sex.
