Dec 7

Post by Truant »

Today was the day that Pearl Harbor was bombed, and while I don't want to say that's insignificant next to what I'm about to mention...I dislike this day for two other reasons.

Two people who each massively impacted music as we hear it today were murdered on this day.

John Lennon.
"Dimebag" Darrell Abbott.

Anyways, take a moment and play a song to remember these guys.

Also of note, on December 7th 1974, the song "Kung Fu Fighting" by Carl Douglas topped the charts and stayed there for 2 weeks.

December 7th is also Tom Waits birthday.

So... Happy Tom Waits Day, everyone!

John Lennon and Darrell Abbot were both shot and killed on December 8th.
The 7th is indeed Tom Waits' birthday however.

I can't comment on the validity of Winnow's post.

wow, I grew up with the wrong date my whole life.

Not only that, the other boards I belong to all think it's the seventh as well.

But after you mentioned it I went and looked it up, and you are correct. It was the 8th.

How fucking weird is that. Well we can start the rememberance a day early. Thanks for the correction Faerin.

I never really cared for Pantera or his guitar work, but he was very respected by his peers. He was one of the more talented and influential guitarists of the 90s.

It's possible Miir. But putting him in the same league with John Lennon?

I can agree with you on that... but not being a fan of Lennon or the Beatles, both of these guys register about the same on my 'meh' meter.

Yeah, that's kind of like saying wrestling is real and actually crying about a wrestler dying because he brought so much good to the world.

Or not?

They were mentioned together because they were both murdered on the same day, not because they were musicians you would compare to each other in their greatness.

We all know who Lennon was, and I doubt anyone would argue the impact and impression he made.

Dimebag was a completely different kind of musician. He was the next generation of simply phenomenal guitar players. He may not directly impact you or your musical tastes, but chances are, if you listen to anything with a guitar in it, that has been made since the late 90's...it's been influenced by him and his technique.

So, in summation...noone said anything about them being in the same league. He did however significantly impact modern music, whether you care to admit it or not.

If you would like to continue this discussion I would be glad to. If however, you want to continue trolling, you can take it elsewhere.
