Age of Empires 3

Post by Menelaos »

Anybody playing this at all? Picked it up yesterday and thought it was lacking in a lot of things that made AoE2 fun. It's really not the same game at all, but completely different. Still pretty fun though.

havent checked up on AOE3, what cultures are there?

No mythology in AOE3 right? Just plain historical units?

Didn't even know it was out already.
Been too busy with DOW and B&W2.

The (p)reviews I'd seen of it were pretty average.

I started through the single player campaign last night. Way too many cutscenes telling me a story (and one that is definately not historically accurate. Come on, I have to chase an Ottoman to the New World because of some secret organization in Europe. I think the team read too many Da Vinci Code like books)

It's entertaining but I will reserve judgement till I get through the whole thing.

I've been playing AOE3 retail for about 2 weeks now (<3 newsgroups)

I haven't touched the campaigns and have only been playing skirmishes against computers on varying difficulty levels...

I fucking love this game and will probably be buying it for online play.

I guess if it ain't broke, don't change a single thing about it. There is virtually no difference between this and Age of Mythology as far as gameplay and mechanics are concerned. It's the same thing as all the AoE games really. There is some evolution, but it is so insignificant it's not really worth mentioning. Having said all the negative, I have to say I've always been a fan of the AoE games and this is as good as the others. Not better, just as good.

The graphics are nice, but still not as good as DoW which came out last year :P Granted, that's a hard one to top. The units make similar sounds as AoM, almost to the pint of annoyance.

So far, I'll give it a 6.5 out of 10. Unfortunately, it has a "been there, done that" feeling since there is so little innovation this time around. It's like Ensamble called this one in.

I feel like its a watered down version of Age of Kings.
The graphics are impressive and there are some fun new features, but for some reason it lacks the excitement that AoE2 had.

...perhaps its because the units are more or less balanced and you cant send 60 Paladins into the enemy base and watch the carnage.
