A History of Violence

Post by Moonwynd »

Saw it this weekend. Cronenberg did a pretty good job.

The movie was pretty intense. It explored some interesting human emotions and relationships. The "action" scenes were pretty visceral.

I would give it an 8.5 out of 10. Rottentomatoes has it at 87.

Regards,

Moon

Sucked and sucked hard. Plot is very, very simple with an ending you would see from a mile away if it wasnt so sudden. The acting was good, action was really nice, but the plot left me feeling like i was watching a stretched 30minute soft core porn. (Sex scenes were damn nice for a regular movie! :) ) Im damn happy I didnt pay to see it. It felt like they cut 30minutes off the movie.

Im afraid Im with Sion here.
I saw it this past sunday with really high expectations, which may have been part of the problem. The plots and sub-plots seemed predictable and formulated, the sex scenes were extreme in an unnecessary way (thanks though, maria), the dialogue was rather cheesy, there was a major plot-hole, and the acting, to the exception of bello and harris (of course, ed harris owns), was lacking - probably in response to the dialogue.
[Show]
I found myself laughing throughout the house scene toward the end. partially because of what other audience members said (my favorite - "does he get to keep the house?") and because everything, even the violence, just seemed so sloppy.

as far as the plot-hole: ed harris's character and his thugs came to town to murder, or at least, kidnap - "joey". but they waste time bothering his wife and daughter (who's shopping on a school-day) while they shop and they didnt seize the opportunity to get joey while he's sitting alone in the diner.
the opening sequence was very well done, however.

academy-award winning cast and crew..."how do you fuck that up?"

:(

graphic violence? check

This was an "ok" movie that I am glad I waited to watch on dvd (netflix not purchase). There was too much that the viewer could already see coming. I think the only "mystery" to the story is what the relationship is between Tom and Joey.

I watched the director's part of the special features, and he explains a bit more about what he wanted from the movie. I think he left out a lot of what he could have included.
