CNN. NOW - Emergency Plane Landing

Post by noel »

Jet Blue flight out of Burbank headed for NY, unable to retract front landing gear which is stuck at 90 degrees from the direction of the plane. You might find another better news source depending upon your locality, but CNN's been carrying the story.

As long as the landing is safe (which it should be), and no one is hurt, it should be fun to watch.

No word on number of passengers. Also, according to the guy who was just on the local news here, that plane can't dump fuel. They're trying to burn as much fuel as possible now.
CNN wrote:LONG BEACH, California (AP) -- A JetBlue airliner was dumping fuel over the ocean Wednesday afternoon as officials tried to determine how to make an emergency landing with the plane's front wheels turned sideways and unable to retract.

The plane left Burbank Airport after 3 p.m. for New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, according to Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Donn Walker.

JetBlue flight 292 was circling the Long Beach Airport, about 30 miles south of Burbank.

Walker said the Airbus A320 was dumping fuel over the Pacific.

No other details were immediately available.

Forest Hills, New York-based JetBlue could not be reached for comment.
Edit: Just heard 140 people on board.

Reality TV.

The odds are high that it will land safely but I'm sure that's not helping the nerves of the passengers and crew.

One thing though--I really would not want the news while on a plane...ffs, all the disaster that is bled out to the masses....

A lady passenger interviewed on said they were watching FOX. She speculated that they couldn't get CNN on their flight.

That might be hard if they get sued by 140 people which is a shame because it's a great airline. We would drive up to JFK just to use them even with Newark being only 12 miles away.

One guy said they were watching it on MSNBC but also said it was the smoothest landing he's been in. I imagine it's because the rear gear had to hit as softly as possible to prevent the nose from going down at too fast a rate.

More a testament to the design and engineering of modern passenger planes, than the 'skill' of the pilot. The front wheels on modern aircraft are not load bearing and they can land fine with or without them.

Why is that? the equipment failed hence the pilot had to change his landing procedure or are you saying the plane dosent need a front wheel? Do you not relize what would happen if he came in at the wrong angle or to fast? that front gear would snap off like a toothpick, hence driving the nose of that plane into the tarmac. But is it because he is a American pilot? Is that the reason you wont at least say good job? you sure did for the French pilot in Canada and that crash was a direct result of pilot error.

Pretty amazing, an A340 skids off the runway and bursts into flames a few minutes later.... only minor injuries reported.

Kudos to the crew and emergency personel."

Miir are you a pilot? Or do you work as an engineer for an aircraft manufacturer?

Undoubtly good engineering as well, but, that could so easily have gone wrong without the right touch to the landing. Looked to me that he was almost intentionaly scrubbing off the rubber on that tire. Guess last thing you would want is for the tires on the nose to suddenly get traction at around 40-60 kt (if I remember correctly, that is the transition speed on a 320 from rudder directional control to nosewheel steering directional control). Snapping the nosewheel strut would be seriously bad. At any speed.

Also remember on airplanes you have individual brakes for the two mains, so you have some directional control from that (PITA to modulate correctly though above walking speed).

My uncle was a pilot for 35 years... said he earned all the money he was paid (and he was paid VERY well) for 2 days work, 2 days where his skill was what kept something bad from happening. I am all for pilots who work 2 days in their career's gettin paid...whatever... ask the people on board what that guys salary is worth... wait, don'task now, by now they have talked to a lawyer.

Actually, the guy who sits in the cube beside me was a pilot for Air India up until last december and we discussed this incident this morning. He's put in hundreds of hours in the cockpit of an Airbus 320 so I would imagine he knows his stuff.

I wasn't implying that the pilot didn't do a good job... Just stating that the design and engineering of the plane played a very large part in the safe landing.

yeh the physics of breaking the nosewheel of are not likely. Heavy steel vs weak rubber = rubber blows, skid on wheel.

They diverted because the gear wouldnt go UP.

Why is it excellent piloting? All they did was land normally and prayed the gear didn't sheer off (which it is designed to do on the airbus.)
They didn't change any 'landing procedures', it was the same kind of landing pilots do every day.

More like gg airbus designers

You wanna give props to a pilot you prop the pilot they were interviewing on the phone during the landing (was the pilot of that united? flight where their engine exploded and they lost ALL hydraulics on the airplane.)

From: http://www.time.com/time/nation/article ... 25,00.html

They brought the plane in as slow as possible, touched down in the center of the runway, and by holding the sidestick back kept the nosewheel from touching down until the last moment, and then applied the brakes to come to a safe stop.

Damn Maybe the plane didnt need the pilot!! Seeing it was a normal landing and all.

heh they definitely changed the normal landing procedures, to say otherwise is extremely ignorant. And yes even though the design and engineering helped a lot it is no cakewalk either.

thats how you land an airplane guy. as gay as miir is, he's right.

the uber pilot they were talking to at the time even said "what they will do is bring the craft down normally and hopefully the wheel will right itself, or it will sheer off"
the only special thing they did was fly around for 3 hours throttling the engines to use up as much fuel as possible to reduce the risk of explosion if they crashed and burned.

TOO SAY OTHERWISE IS IGNORANT!

- They came in slower than usual
- They kept the nose wheel up longer while breaking as much as possible
- He had to keep the plane straight with the 90 degree wheel. If you think that is normal well.. then I am glad I don't fly with you.
