Early guidance looks like Texas/Mexico...depends on how fast it moves and how long the hot air mass over the Southern US right now lasts...

The good news is Phillipe looks like an up and out...

Hmmm, New Orleans needs a little more time to rebuild before getting wiped out again. If another hurricane hits now, they may not get the message that it's retarded to rebuild the below sea level city again.

Give it a year hurricane gods. It's a trade off. If one hits now, the southerners may think it's a bargain...two hurricanes rebuilt for the price of one. I think we'll actually save money if it's wiped out half rebuilt. Then it's two hurricanes for the price of 1.5 but maybe force an actual plan to move most of the city out of the natural lake it's in so the ultimate rebuilding effort is effedtive.

I say we blanket the area of New Orleans with conventional bombs and level the place. Use the existing structures as landfill. Then rebuild on that and be ABOVE sea level...

You could always quit battling mother nature and rebuild New Orleans in the mold of Venice, Italy. It would create all sorts of new jobs with the instant huge demand for gondolas.

On a serious note, I find it very ironic that I am less concerned about this storm than the rest of the country. Don't we have a war going on somewhere?

Anyway, I'll take as many paid days off as they tell me!

Wow, I haven't seen binding restrictions for insurance this far inland in Texas for a long time except for isolated areas once in a while. I actually hope it does hit closer to Houston than Corpus just so Austin is not on the NE edge of the storm. Strong winds are one thing, but the additional crap that comes with that side (tornadic activity, etc.) would not be good here.

You know with Katrina, I didn't hear any of the Jerry Falwells of the world saying, this happened because of gay people, etc. etc. etc.

Obviously since gods point wasn't portrayed by these people - he's trying again.

A question for the budding meteorologists...what is the direct effect of the lower pressure in a hurricane? I was looking at a history of the hurricanes to hit Texas since the 1700's (obviously not as exact in the older dates) and the lowest pressure since the 1900 hurricane that hit Galveston was in the 920's. I was just looking at the recent numbers, and Rita is at 898...

Lower Pressure > Greater Inflow/Outflow Volume > Greater Windspeed...

Rita is #3 on all time low pressure as of 10pm cdt...with 897 mb, winds 175mph sustained...

#2 is the labour day '35 hurricane
#1 is Gilbert at 888mb

Was pretty cool, as we only lost power for like 10 hours. It was interesting because we didn't get the nastiest winds until after it was already past us and Cuba, right about the time it hit the hot, deep part of the Gulf. You could really tell that wind was being caused by the suction for the hurricane.

NEW ORLEANS — Hurricane Rita's wind-driven storm surge topped one of New Orleans' battered levees and poked holes in another Friday, sending water gushing into already-devastated neighborhoods just days after they had been pumped dry.
So who was saying that New Orleans only gets hit with hurricanes once every hundred or so years powerful enough to flood the city? How about twice in less than a month?

Yes, yes, rebuild the city! With two hurricanes in less than a month, New Orleans should be good for several hundred years!

I saw the funniest thing on TV during the storm. One of the teams of media vultures was in the lobby of their hotel, shooting footage of the boulevard, proclaiming themselves TRAPPED BY THE SURGING STORM WATERZ, and right after the guy said that like 5 cars drove by. There was about 4 inches on the road. Fucking media.

Katrina ruined it for florida. Now every single time some piss poor cat1 hurricane comes our way, every news station is gonna send some young reporter to over-sensationalize it.

"Im worried Nancy I really am, apparantly they have predicted FIVE inches of rain! Pray for me."

I was watching CNN and FOX last night while the hurricane eye came ashore. Both networks had morons standing in the rain and wind two feet away from shelter trying to show how brave they were. I always laugh at shit like that. Seeing a reporter getting pummeled in the side of the head by rain and wind helps nothing and if one of the idiots actually took some flying glass in the face, they'd be proclaimed a hero and would have most of the news coverage focused on them instead of the actual storm.

This could of been the "perfect" storm. I rode it out in Houston, but I was pretty freaking scared at certain points. A Cat 5 making landfall in Galveston is not good news. Granted that didn't pan out (thankfully). Its funny how after the fact everyone wants to blame everything on the media. In reality if it did hit, the media were the ones that saved lives.

How do you figure, beyond announcing evacuation notices? That's something they're required to do IIRC, they'd charge for it if they could.

What they show beyond that generally doesn't have much to do with reality, and most people are smart enough to know it.

You're right. I just thought the local weather guys did a great job posting updates 24/7 when you could tell they hadn't had any sleep. There was plenty of dumbasses "reporting." (In my defense I was totally out of it when I made that last post, so don't take it seriously).

edit... What do you guys think about the traffic clusterfuck with the evacuation. It was pretty surreal seeing the amount of people stuck on the major highways here.

I thought it was interesting how it worked out given that the evacuation timeline wasn't followed by the people. There were certain "zones" to be emptied in order, but everyone started to panic and just drove. There was no way the roads, gas stations, etc. could have held up any "better" than they did.
