Right up there with the first album, which is a good thing. The appearances from everyone including maroon 5 is excellent. The production is amazing as usual. Definately a must have for any hip hop fan.

Where do you live that you have this already ? last I heard it was pushed back into september.. I downloaded some songs from online that claim to be off his new album but they are mostly from mixtapes i think.

It's on the newgroups, though a couple of the songs seem to be of less-than-stellar quality.

But it's the legit copy, as far as I can tell, and I agree with Zammykins!

Well I found out that it is still coming out next tuesday. Im not gonna tell you
that the copy isnt authentic because I don't know for sure, but the thing about rap music lately, especially with high selling artists like kanye is this. They purposely leak some songs that are not going to be on the album to get the hype up for him. but they usually do release a few of the songs that will make the final cut too.

For example I am fairly sure the song he did with john gayer is gonna be on his cd, but i havent been able to find anything more than a sample of it for the life of me.

I got the special edition cd yesterday, and I like it. I think I just have to listen to it a bit more for it to grow on me though.. Although I have heard over half the songs from it on sirius or from mixtapes.

I didn't like it but am also not a hip hop fan. The first song I listened to made me feel like I was listening to a puff daddy remix. Can't think of the song that was used for it atm. I'm sure someone that has access to the first song can post the original song title though.

If you are talking about 'Heard em Say', then you are wrong. That is original and contains no sampling.

I'll listen to the song when I get home. I thought of the original song right away while listening to it. If it's not sampling, it's not sampling like Vanilla Ice didn't sample Queen because of one missed beat.

The Vanilla Ice version was obviously different. The Queen version goes: "Dun dun dun dada dun" The Vanilla Ice version goes: "Dun dun dun dada dun dun". It's not the same.

There's nothing wrong with sampling when it's just used as an element of a song. What bothers me is when someone samples the hook from a hit song and uses it for the hook/chorus of a 'hip hop' song. Puff Diddydaddy was especially bad for using that cop out.

I don't really recall Diddy ever taking lyrics from another song... but even if he did. The thing about him is that he has people ghost write everything he has ever rapped in his entire career. He has openly admitted this on several occasions, including a new single he released where the chorus goes... "It don't matter if I write Rhyme's , i write checks" or something like that.

Who said anything about lyrics?

He sampled the entire verse for 'Every Breath You Take' and copied the chorus melody note-for-note.

Been Around the World sampled Bowie's Lets Dance and used it as the cornerstone of the songs hook and melody.

Those are jsut 2 I remember off the top of my head.
I could list more, but I really don't have time look up the info.

Diddy really only put rap verses in the place of the original verses and commonly used an entire song, sometimes even the original chorus.

This was very common in OLD school hip hop/rap. But when Diddy did it, it was just sort of, not creative!

That said, some of his verses are worth listening to.

To give an analogy, it's sort of like having to listen to a Van Halen song just to get to the guitar solo. We all know the song is some rudimentary 3 chord slop an elementary school music class could put together, but the solo is worth extracting from it!

Back on track, I haven't heard this album yet, which saddens me...cause I get hard for Kanye. Think i'll make a trip this weekend to go buy it. I thought College Dropout was brilliant, looking forward to more of Kanye!

I just don't like that you singled out puffy. I am not necessarily disagreeing with you, but if you really listened to a wide variety of rap, you would realize that 70% of rappers are just as bad or worse then him, they just use lesser known songs to sample beats/lyrics from.

will smith is the king of sampling, he almost puts diddy to shame. but because the police sample was done in remembrace and probably overnight given the timing, I never cared much for it.
but Im disappointed that kanye, a top tier producer, would have so many sampled on his album. hes still one of the best out atm, so I look forward to getting this when Im off the unemployed line.

Well, even College Dropout had a ton of samples. The trick is how well you blend them. Does it sound like a chop shop slap together, of you speaking over a record playing in the background. Or does it sound seamless where you can't tell where the sample ends and the new material begins, creating a new song entirely.

And Funkmasterr, it's nothing personal to you or Diddy. He was always criticized for doing that, and he was definately the most succesful of those that ever did that style. Hence why he got picked. Why would i pick someone you've never heard of as an example?

All hip hop/rap albums have samples...and tons of em, you just don't realize it. Were I the producer, I would take that as a compliment to the excellent work! If you can't detect the sample...that's good work!

If you wanted to take it another direction entirely...using well known songs as samples could be viewed as a crutch to help boost the popularity of a song. A sign of weak kung fu indeed!

edit- actually farrel, in most of Will Smith's new work, most of the stuff you're thinking of as a sample, is actually re-recorded specifically for that song. He IS taking an old song, and using it for his new song...but it's rearranged and rerecorded specifically for that song, so it's something different entirely.

hmm, I didnt know that wasnt considered sampling. I wouldnt say its different entirely because theyre still using instrumentals that are not originally their own. but "men in black/forget me nots" was a lot less severe (or more original) than "kashmiir(sp)/come with me"...so I see what you mean.

Just wanted to add, this album is great.

Beautiful tracks, which I expected...but at the same time they're completely unexpected with regards to what makes up the tracks.

Yeah, its growing on me more now that I have listened to it for a week. For some reason a lot of albums are like that for me lately.
