Pretty Good Op-Ed piece in NYT today

Post by Voronwë »

...reason and breeding, imagination and good intentions are nonetheless trumped by the contagion of hatred and by the human propensity toward extreme and unquestioning enthusiasm for a cause - whatever cause. It is what links enemies, what makes terrorists "martyrs" and "patriots" among their own - the fanatic heart beating in the breast of every true believer.
remembering that the VV login is: veeshanvault/password for the NYT if you dont want your own login (its free).

anyway, the column isnt resonate for me so much because of the moderately critical point about Bush, but because it has a very unusual component for a political statement in contemporary American 'airspace' - and that is the tacit acknowledgment that the one levying criticism claims no moral highground or any other such haven from introspection.

His assumptions are way too generalised.

It's like reading a poem, or a prayer, which is interesting enough I suppose.

Are you raising the concept of moral relativism (in an indirect way) Voronwe in that last sentence? Can't quite figure it out :P

The author is a loser.
Surely we must all bear our share of guilt and deep regret, some sadness at the idea that here we are, another August into our existence, and whether we arrived by way of evolution or intelligent design or the hand of God working over the void, no history can record that we've progressed beyond our hateful, warring and fanatical ways.
I'm not saying he's wrong, but he's off the scale on the angst meter and more pompous than even me.

Seems to me there's an Eagle's song he should take to heart... "Get over it!".
