K-Moll, I require yer golf help

Post by Canelek »

So I was in Hood River the other day playing my first round of golf in 16 years--yup, 16. Of course, it was quite the relaxing round, given that my seven other fellow golfers all were Army Airborne drunks and terrible golfers. However, the competition was fierce and every now and again, someone would bust out a killer shot. I was quite surprised and fucking happy as all hell to have retained so much from all of the pro lessons as a kid! :D :D

Anyshit, I have the golf bug bigtime again after so long and am looking to set myself up with some clubs. When I get back from NY, I plan on tossing around $500 on a full set (1,3,5.....3-9, pw, sw). None of that shit that looks like a wooden clog on a toothpick, mind you. Right now, I await a call saying I have a go at the Nike employee store and if they actually give employee discounts on clubs--not confirmed yet--but if they do, I have some hookups.

If that does not work, I will be looking for used or decent new gear...I do not need beginner shit, but I am not going to drop 3k on Taylor Made... ;)

What would you recommend, ya damn hillbilly? :D

The biggest price is your driver. I do heartily recommend Ebay for golf clubs as well for some pieces.

If I had $500 to spend right now for full set I would buy the following:

Driver: Either a Big Bertha Titanium ($149) or King Cobra 400sz ($179) probably a 9.0-9.5 loft

3-wood and 5-wood : Callaway steelheads (used) Should be able to grab these off E-bay for about $50 a club. Very very solid and sweet.

Irons: This is where you have to do some shopping around. You can pick up some decent irons by Tommy Armour brand new for about $200. You can probably do a lot of shopping on Ebay and find a better used set for $200-250. Irons can really really vary for each person. Just make sure you get cavity back and not forged blades. If you can find a set of Cobra 2's you will be vary happy.

Putter: Another real subjective thing. I found a 2-ball putter from an off-brand that I liked better than the $200 putters from Odyssey. I would shop around and look for 2 ball putters that are somewhat heavy and have plastic inserts and are hard for you to bring back off-line.

Again...Ebay is definitely your friend. Lot of golf shops sell shit brand new for rock bottom prices there.

I'll add my support to the King Cobra driver. While mine is a little older than the moster K posted, it's still a great driver with a great big sweet spot.
