Phil Jackson coming back to LA!
There is a god!

For the record, I don't think this will cause the Lakers to win any championships anytime soon, but at least they might be watchable now...

Don't the Lakers have a lot of bad contract situations making it hard to get talent atm?
Phil is going to make 10 Million isn't he? I'd come back too. As Kelshara said, he's had talent in the past, this year will determine if he has the coaching skills to work with a sucky team or if it was about the money.
Should be interesting. I don't see them as a top four team in the West. Spurs, Suns, Mavs and Nuggets will be those with Houston close behind. At best, the Lakers could grab a 7th or 8th seed IMO...there's the draft and offseason trades to go though so it's early.

I think best case is that they go out in the first round of the playoffs next year.
The contract situation is totally fucked for them. Any talent they're able to get will be like a Veterans exception or a draft pick.
I do think that having Phil there will help them get people to go there once they're out from under their money issues in a year or so (much more so than just having Kobe there).

I think this is a great move if he sticks around awhile.
Kobe took so much shit this past year that everyone forgot how good he is. He's still just about the best individual player in the NBA (along with T-Mac, Manu, and Iverson). He's not the team player that some guys are, but he's not horrible, and plenty of individual players have won championships on the right team. Lamar Odom is a good player who can score, rebound, defend, and has a deft passing touch. If Phil can get them playing together, and get contributions from guys like Caron Butler, the Lakers could make the playoffs this year.
They don't have any cap room right now, but they will in another year or two. If they can add some pieces, like a point guard with a handle, a dead-eye three point shooter, or a banger who can mix it up in the paint, they could be real good once the cap space comes.

Kobe is an asshole. Whehter or not this is a sucessful venture is soley based on Kobe. IF doesn't fuck it up, if he doesn't act like a selfish asshole, if he doesn't alienate his teammates, if he does listen to Phil and play within the system, then they will win NBA Championships again.
I wanted to see Kobe/Shaq/Jackson win many many more titles. That asshole Kobe fucked it all up. I hope hes done with his off the court and lockroom and behind the coaches back antics. I would love to see Phil win a 10th.

Not just typically, it was mandatory up until now, sort of. It's one of the reasons anyone who knew anything about the Knicks understood that he'd never show his face on a team that actually needed to turn itself around (think Larry Brown).Kelshara wrote:Jackson has typically gone to the talent, not vice versa.
If he can put this one together, even if he still has top talent on the team he's coaching, I would be impressed.
I was listening to the press conference while coming from a client, he is compelling to listen to. I can certainly understand why pretentious assholes can be controlled under his wing (Joe Torre is similar in this regard)
Above it all, I still can't stand the NBA for some reason. While Phoenix was never going to win a title, the style that they played was actually complelling to watch. And you don't know how much that pains me to say based off of the annoying 3k post thread Winnow created following their surprising, yet forgetful for the textbooks, season.

isnt he the clown who said he needed to take 2 months off cause he was tired from producing a rap album? i hope he takes 2 months off in jail.
One in the same...
Canelek wrote:Yeah, yeah, fuck them. Hey, it sucks that fans can treat you bad, but that is part of the biz, tough shit. I have been unfair in the past in my character judgement towards NBA players. However, when it comes to this kind of shit, I treat it as any other sport. Sure, not all pro sports players are assholes... it only takes a few (in this case more than a few) jerkoffs to make quality players look bad...
What is next though? This season has been pretty impressive so far:
Drug busts
Dog fighting
Rap albums made to talk shit about other players
Melee with fans...

Canelek wrote:I am always happy to see amateur American athletes succeed at the Olymics, but I just don't give a rat's ass about basketball in general, much less the jackass NBA players. Let the amateurs play in the Olympics (yes, I know other countries use pro players). Win or lose, at least you give some guys a chance to compete even though they don't own 4 yachts and complain about needing a bigger salary for a 5th.
I do not feel that way about pros playing on the Olympic US or Canada hockey teams though....because hockey is fucking cool! Very Happy Also, I think the hockey players in Noth America actually understand the honor that it is to represent their country.
These past few years, the NBA has fallen from my interest to the level of Tennis and Figure Skating. Welcome to your new status bitches! Very Happy
Canelek wrote:Those idiots on the Olympic committee, or whoever else creates policy made a huge mistake letting NBA players in. Didn't they realize what miscreants the NBA players are compared even with other professional athletes? I mean really DUH!
I get it. Will you shut the fuck up please?SYLVUS IN THE FORUM RULES wrote:If you don't like a sport, nobody cares. Now THAT was funny! Cane, please keep posting rips on the NBA, I would be nice to see a summary post every few months saying "please stop"
anyways, I am happy to see Phil Jackson coaching again, but come on, did Kobe mature enough to be coached? Cause you know they will bring more big names in again, maybe not shaq-quality, but Kobe is going to eventually have to share the ball and the shots...which I'm still not convinced he can do.
I went to a few Bullets games this year, and the Lakers was one of them. He took like 30 shots in that game, and swear he sat out most of it. He is a spoiled ball hog that can't stand to NOT be the center of attention. Now the center of attention is back on Phil Jackson, so I give them till 2 months into next season to admit, again, to hating each other, or whatever.
edit: added "not" above, cause that's what I meant
