I've looked, and been unable to find anything that is anywhere near as fun as Wing Commander 4: Prophecy was.

Prophecy was the last game? I saw that there was a PS:WC4 release after Prophecy... but thought Prophecy was the last PC release :(

I found Freelancer enjoyable, although I can't compare it to the WC games as I have not played them.

My only qualm with Freelancer was it was fairly linear and it was difficult to get geared up until after you had already beaten the storyline, although you were than free to go and do anything you liked.

Starlancer was really good, never played Freelancer though. But those games are both several years old.

I remember Independence War being a good one. I keep meaning to reinstall it, but I have not gotten around to it yet.

Freelancer was pretty fun. And it plays well without a big stupid joystick. There's also a decently active online community and quite a few good mods.

Interesting, I never thought of looking into mods for Freelancer...

It does play well with just a mouse and keyboard, I never even hooked my joystick up to play it.

X-Wing Alliance, especially with all the community mods, is not too shabby of a game and it runs fairly well on an average machine. Basically, because Prophecy was so lame (compared to WC3 and WC4) and the movie blew ass, there will never be another Wing Commander game.
War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .

Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."

Actually, I think there will never be another WC game because Origin is no longer around. :) I mean, there's EA: Origin but the people who created WC don't even work there anymore I don't think.

edit: nm, Origin is completely gone now... too bad :( http://internetgames.about.com/b/a/068378.htm

Freespace 1 & 2 are beyond jesus for space flight games. Can take like 5 mins to fly from one end to the other on some of the alien cap ships.
