Do You own a Gun

Post by nobody »

i decided to keep this as a simple yes or no poll. if you'd like to add that you don't but are not opposed to gun ownership then post. i'm mostly interested in how many people actually own one.

I couldn't fathom a need for a gun since I do not hunt.

From what I've noticed, gun-type people never own one gun. They own as many as they can. I've always found that a bit creepy. /shrug

I don't own a gun. Considering that I have a small apartment where people often drink alcohol, I think the risk of someone accidentally getting shot is far, far greater than that of me ever using it in self-defense.

I'm not opposed to them, and I would consider buying one if I lived alone and felt I was in a very dangerous situation, although I can't imagine many scenarios where that would happen. I think people often vastly overrate the day-to-day danger they experience, and vastly overrate the efficacy of a gun at reducing that danger.

Yup, I enjoy hunting. I only own one handgun, but will probably add to that with an influx of disposable income. Why? I like to go to the range and fire off some rounds, it is quite relaxing.

I do, however, carry my sidearm while hunting due to the chance of a tweaker or poacher(rare, but it happens!).

As far as self defense at home, I live in a nice area, so it is not an issue.

Edit: Added some clarity to my meaning of self defense...

I've been to a range a few times, though I don't own one myself. It was fun.

Having a gun doesn't necessarily make you an asshole, or a moron. It's just that assholes and morons seem more likely to either have or need guns.

Nothing wrong with owning one if you're responsible about gun safety, and where to keep it locked up, especially if you've got kids

I dont at the moment, although i grew up around them and have fired handguns and rifles since the age of 7, il consider getting a nice handgun eventually mainly for using at the range...if a gun is well protected/hidden, it wouldnt pose a threat to anyone

I don't own a gun and have no desire to own one. The slight chance of encountering an armed robber in my home isn't worth it, which is the only time I'd consider plugging someone as I don't want much in life but I do want asylum* in my abode.

Baseball bats are ok though.

We own multiple guns. We hunt. We shoot varmints. We shoot for the enjoyment of it. The 'we' includes my wife and I. She's a better deer hunter than I am although I'm the one who qualifed Expert Rifleman in the USMC. I keep a loaded revolver in the bedroom. In this area of north central Wisconsin you probably should assume that every household has a loaded firearm somewhere on the premises.

I've got a couple handguns. One kept under the bed and one that I keep in the truck. My job requires that I go into some really rough neighborhoods sometimes.

Even though I don't hunt, I've also got a couple rifles and shotguns that have been passed down to me from my father and my grandfather. Oh, and a SKS semi-automatic rifle and I forgot to mention the .22 caliber pistol I keep for target practice and snakes.

I'm an avid hunter and do own several shotguns and several rifles (all for different purposes obviously depending on what I am hunting).

I also keep a loaded gun strapped to the back of my headboard. Just a habit instilled from my father years ago when he had a break in with an armed person.

No handguns yet, but probably will in the future, I enjoy shooting them at the range a great deal.

Just a .45 handgun for self defense and range shooting. I usually go about three times a month with friends or family to the range.

I have no plans on getting anything other than a rifle for hunting purposes. I personally do not see the need for assault rifles, plus they are expensive as hell to feed.

I inherited an old (vintage 1870) double barrel 12 ga. from my grandfather. Also have a .410 shotgun that I used for hunting grouse in my teens. They're kept locked up and I haven't used them in years. For household protection, I have a 3' piece of 1" pipe that puts Winnow's bat to shame :p

This thread and my response kinda jogged something for me: Canada has some (IMO) excessive gun control laws. I don't mind the need for acquistion certificates (screened by the police) for those buying firearms, the effective ban on handguns (they're good for fuck all but target shooting and killing people at close range... and you can shoot targets with all sorts of things), the requirements of weapons and ammunition being stored seperately but things like the national registry go too far. But for years more people have been murdered with knives, blunt objects and other means than firearms... yet every time a firearm is used, there is a media frenzy with groups calling for tougher legislation and harsher penalties for those who use firearms in the commission of a crime... I mean a person is dead if they are shot, beat to death, blown up, strangled, stabbed or poisoned, so why(other than premeditation) should one be more harshly judged/punished than the others?

I've been hunting a few times, not really my thing but I do like to get out in the woods and hang out with everyone. My hunting rifle is a 7MM Mag, not the most powerful but will do the trick(lot's of powder). No handguns at the moment but want to get a 9MM or 40 cal S&W for the range. Holding out right now because I have 2 young sons and no where that I would consider safe to keep it... me having fun at the range isn't worth an accident, my boys are too inqusitive.

Trigger lock + safe, Marb. Also, keep ammo locked away in a different place than the gun. As far as handguns, the .40 S&W is a good round. 9mm is pretty much boring to shoot with.

In your area, there should still be many good courses in hunting and firearm safety for youths. The AR Fish and Game is a good start. Whether you hunt or not, it is important that young folks learn early to help them be responsible.

Your kids are young though, so you have a while before they can grasp the dangers, of course.

...and as far as that 7mm Mag...it will drop an Elk with an accurate shot. ;)

No the registry was a farcical failure. The only interesting part about it now is the cost of it was over a billion dollars and anyone with experience in economic policy and federal expenditures will tell you that a program like that would have not even cost a quarter of that. Makes you wonder where that money is. Eventually the liberal leaders will piss off some other back bencher that has knowledge of whats going on and that scandal will come out.

I used to own a glock illegally back when I was living alone in a shitty neighborhood. I handed it in at one of those police department gun amnesty days.

I carry one to threaten people with after I've spit on them.

Seriously, though, I'm not opposed to gun ownership as a global concept, but I *have* met many people that should be kept far away from any sort of weapon.

I own a few hanguns, rifles and shotguns for the range and different types of hunting. They stay locked in a safe that I can get into fairly quickly. Both my kids know how to shoot and have had the basics of gun safety drilled into them since age 6 or so.

If I really felt I needed a gun for home defense to the point that it was a concious thought, I'd probably move. I don't generally have any reason to go places where I'd think a weapon was needed for defense. :vv_love: FL concealed carry law, just because.

I like old vintage rifles and handguns. I have an old M1 Carbine. I keep the ammo locked up and separate. I want to get an M1 Garand next and eventually a 1911 45 caliber handgun. I enjoy the historical aspect of them. For protection, I keep a WWII rifle bayonet next to the bed. The only thing I keep loaded is a pellet gun for those damn squirrels in my bird feeder.

Yea I actually really like the 7mm Mag, and you guys are right with the power behind it that bullet will take out just about anything from a pretty good distance :) My comparison was to a 300 WinMag which has a little bit bigger shell, not that I need it, just like to make sure my shoulder hurts after an afternoon at the range...

Since most of my friends hunt a LOT I'll teach my sons to hunt as well when they grow up but that will be at least 5 or 6 years before I even take Joseph. Me, I'd rather fish and he and I will be starting to do that in a couple of weeks :)

It wasn't intentionally for that reason, but my kids being around and seeing guns from an early age gave them the preconception of firearms being a dangerous tool. Not too different than a nail gun or circular saw.

Rather viewing it as a toy or some similar idiocy like they'll get from watching television and movies.

I do not own a gun. In the past, this has been the start of many arguments in my marriage. This has been the only firm request of my wife, not to have a gun in the house. Three kids later, I now know that she was correct. I do own a bow for hunting. Only pussies need to use a gun to shoot a deer anyways.

Dont own a gun. Never fired a gun. Dont plan on firing a gun.

I have no problem with guns or gun enthusiasts. Ive just never had any desire to own a gun and have never been faced with a situation in which I would want/need a gun.

Yeah I put myself in that last category. I don't want guns in my house. The chances of dying are higher in a gun fight...

I'm not for banning them though. I have fired a couple weak rifles... That's kind of fun, but I just wouldn't want one in my house.

Technically, yes. A flintlock sleeve pistol, a Derringer dueling pistol (non functional), a single-barrel shotgun from the 1880s, and an Italian rifle from WWII. All inheirited, no ammo for any of 'em. I'd be too wary of them blowing the hell apart to shoot them anyway.

No gun, although I'm well trained with them.

As a husband and parent I worry about defending my family against intruders and can condone having a gun for that purpose, but I also don't want a loaded gun in the house because my daughter could someday get ahold of it.

Plus I did mention I'm married and women are batshit insane as a general rule. I don't want to wake with a gun in my mouth because I left the toilet seat up.

I own several. I love to hunt. You need different types of guns depending on what you plan to hunt. Sure, some are just for fun. Maybe I got a good deal on a few and so I bought them. As I got older, I started getting more guns over time. I got a few as birthday presents and the like. They are an excellent way to stop any critter trouble.

I own a few hand guns also. There is not a whole lot of need for them, but they are fun to shoot. The ammo can get pretty expensive though. I will be applying for my license to carry sooner or later. I have not had much time to do that yet. Maybe after I move, then I will.

As far as my logic for owning guns? Why not! I enjoy hunting, and I cook mostly anything I kill. Would I ever use one on a person? I would rather not. If myself/family/friends were threatened with equal force, or there was some kind of robbery going on that involved my property? I would not hesitate. Even then, with the way laws are today, I would be putting myself at a huge risk.

I have a pistol, because I never wanna be the guy who brings a knife to a gunfight.

p.s. I no longer own any hunting rifles, as I have no place to hunt. So I guess I'm the first "gun-type person" y'all know who only owns one.
