Alabama Bill Targets 'Gay' Books

Post by Kylere »

CBS News has picked up on Republican Alabama lawmaker Gerald Allen's attempt to ban public school libraries from buying new copies of plays or books by gay authors, or about gay characters. He don't look at it as censorship, he's just "protecting the hearts and souls and minds of our children." Allen originally wanted to ban even some Shakespeare. After criticism, he narrowed his bill to exempt the classics, although he still can't define what a classic is. Also exempted now Alabama's public and college libraries.
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/04/ ... 1106.shtml

I was once a Republican but people like this are exactly why I vote libertarian now. I cannot stomach the self-righteous arrogance of either major party, between the "for the children" and "for our God" of the Republicans and the "for the children" and "for our bleeding hearts" of the Dems I have been sickened by the two party system.

Anyone proposing such ignorant legislation should be recalled and never voted for again. The damnable thing is that I question the concept of giving gay source material to children, but I still think this blanket concept is ignorant. Then add in that merely being gay is supposed to make any book your write questionable? The only way I will back a ban of gay material is if we are talking about tripe like Ann Rice's gay vampires/demons and even then I would only back that because the books IMHO suck.

You should consider yourself favorable toward a political party because of its platform, not because of exceptions to it.

Anyway, no one in their right mind, in my opinion, would think what this idiot is using his power to do. Art is art. It is not important whether the artist is gay or not. Also, many of great old classics have had gay characters in them, no big deal.

This really isn't surprising, Republican party platform/policy is unabashedly anti-homosexual and pro censorship.

Find something in the Republican platform and charter that supports your statement.

Censorship? Wasn't it Tipper Gore who headed the censorship craze in the 90's?

Bah. Don't even answer. Don't bother.

That was like 20 years ago (idiot)... And the PMRC was pretty damn docile when compared to the likes of Falwell and the current batch of ultra-right, god fearing republicans.

In the 2 most recent decades, the republicans have had a virtual monoply on the censorship and anti-homosexual platform.

Bah. Don't even answer. Don't bother

the modern day republicans have built there platform on what they accused the democrates of doing in the 80's there platform is one of big government...anti gay rights, pro censorship (republican lawmakes are trying to put CENSORSHIP or decency laws on CABLE and SATTELITE tv) and of slowly creating a christian theocracy as they try to put christian "values" of anti abortion rights and anti gay rights and "one nation under god" in government

if you dont see this in the MAJORITY of the republicans in power then you have "divorced yourself from reality"

Why does everyone bring up Tipper? Yes she was one of the heads of the PMRC ALONG with a bunch of Republican wives as well. The PMRC was a bipartisan committee and you will notice that as soon as Al got a little higher in the political chain she was obviously told to STFU and did...

You should consider yourself favorable toward a political party because of its platform, not because of exceptions to it.
The only thing more self evident than your ignorance is your persistance, in this era you should be able to self-educate yourself beyond this pathetic little attempt at thought you try to demonstrate here. The reason to oppose a party is BECAUSE of its platform, and while there is no webpage listing of the backwards fundamentalist christian nut stance the Reps have adopted, it is clear in their actions and demeanor, just as the Dems demonstrate their ignorance of reality with each breath.

The difference between the current leadership of the Republican party and the Taliban is only one of religion since they maintain the same bigoted stance.

I am glad you have learned the word tool, since it is so self descriptive for you that I am impressed that you can handle spelling it.

Well it's obvious there is propoganda on both sides (fascist and non fascist) but if you bother checking history or sources that sit outside the political spectrum (such as intellectuals, aid agencies, apolitical watch dogs etc) you can begin to assemble a non biased view about what is happening, if you read widely enough.

That is the problem though, most people are too lazy/stupid to consider anything outside of their own world, ala Midnyte.

Before you start mare bear in mind at least I have a tendency to have fact on my side that is fairly easily verifiable. You mostly base your opinion on your opinion.

while i am a fellow registered libertarian the party does hold some fucked up stances on certain issues as well, yet they are a better representation of what the american government should be then any other party

You're confusing the far left with what are predominantly centre/centre-left people here. If you wanna make a protest vote feel free, but that doesn't make you superior to any one else and just as smug and banal as the people on the left you're thinking of.

I am pretty skeptical about the intellectuals too, most that comment much on politics usually have their own political view. It may sit outside the mainstream, but that doesn't mean it isn't there.

Umm Marb, the hitler thing cannot be invoked by intentional usage, and only people who read too much Penny Arcade think it has to be all caps and spelled like that.

Ok then, look we all know that Bush and his cronies are heading down the same path the Nazi's did in the 20s... back before anyone took notice that anything was wrong. "Oh, they are doing this for the good of our nation, yea!" Few people recognized what was really happening and most of them got out.

Book burning, banning all decent etc... done by many of the years not just the Nazis. However all of those were at least in the public eye considered an enemy and against everything this Nation stood for... hmmm but now it's "ok"
