Heart attack victim goes unnoticed at Pentecostal revival

Post by Kelgar »

http://larknews.com/december_2004/secondary.php?page=1
MIAMI, Okla. — In the midst of a "Holy Spirit" revival meeting at Full Gospel Temple Saturday night, Barry Munrow, 58, suffered a heart attack and went unnoticed for three hours because dozens of people were "slain in the Spirit" around him.

"I thought he was overcome by the power of God," says associate pastor Kevin Toomey, 35, who saw Munrow fall into the aisle during the visiting evangelist's sixth impassioned altar call. An usher laid a modesty cloth over Munrow and various people prayed for him throughout the evening. The evangelist came by at one point and touched Munrow's forehead and said, "More, Lord. Fill him up."

But at 11 p.m., when the service wound down, people noticed that Munrow had not moved for at least two hours. They also noticed he was blue.

"That's when we knew something was wrong," says pastor Lou Dilbeck, who has known Munrow for twenty years.

...
...

"We want people to meet with God at our meetings, but not face to face," he says.
Comedy. This kind of irony doesn't get much funnier.

What's your point for bringing this up?

just looking for an opportunity to take a cheap shot at people?

I've never quite understood pentecostal folk either, but I'm sure the hell not laughing at a group of people who lost a friend due to a tragic misunderstanding.

Dehumanize those who aren't like you and then demand that they respect your different ways. See how far that gets you in life.

I can't even say what I mean.

I'm told time and time again that I should respect people I disagree with. I struggle to do this because it's a fair request for civil living and it respects freedom.

Yet, time and time again I see people who promote the idea of tolerance, bashing the hell out of anyone unlike them.

I make efforts to vote in a tolerant manner, or struggle to respect those I disagree with yet the other side constantly trashes my home team.

Hypocrisy is such a chafing quality.

Double standards....I sure do love em. And some of you serve them up daily.

Laughing about a religious man dying while in church is okay, but mentioning you could care less about a drugee/rocker named "dimebag" dying is not.

ROFL!!!!! You make me look so good. /hugs

No I agree, that's not funny, it's sad.

I would think though with so many people around him, someone could help him...

I don't know that it's even about intolerance or disagreement.
The humor is in the irony.

If you know anything about pentecostals and thier tent parties, faith orgies, laying on hands, speaking in tongues and all that crazy stuff, you'd see the real irony.

sure it is sad this guy died, but the circumstances of his death are wierd. i'm sorry they are.

if you are bothered by the fact that some persons think this is humorous that's cool, and maybe sensible.

Somebody come up with one social setting where that is normal behavior to have a person collapse next to you and you just throw a sheet over him and keep on doing whatever you were doing.

Thats not normal. Thats wierd.

i cannot imagine any non-catastrophic circumstance where somebody dropping unconcious for hours would not elicit a response from normal human beings. If these were "drug-addled" teens at some sort of ecstasy-laiden rave, it would be all "look what society has come to...etc".

To be honest I laughed when I read it and wasn't offended, not because I have a problem with Christians but because of the whole situation, plus I'm just a laid back person.

I think Adex and Midnyte have a problem with people who consistently condescend and laugh at anything having to do with Christians, and see somewhat of a double standard when they compare some of your (using this as a general term not necessarily you miir) ultra-sensitive comments regarding some issues to comments like the ones on this thread. Or, as I pointed out, lack of comments...not that I speak for Adex or Midnyte.

Exactly. "Dimebag" dies and there are all these posts about how awful it is, blah blah blah. A man dies while celebrating his religion and mysteriously no one cares except to poke fun.

It's bullshit double standards, but no one here will fess up and admit it. Miir would rather bash me instead of focusing in on the truth. Keep it up troll boy.

I think people laughed (not that I agree with this) because he died, not only while practicing his religion, but potentially because he was practicing it. Dimebag, on the other hand, was murdered.

Of course neither case is really that humorous.

Everyone pokes fun at pentecostals.
They are the sideshow freaks of christianity.
Heck, even anglicans make fun of pentecostals.

I think its ridiculous that the people sitting next to this man were so oblivious to the fact that this man had a heart attack that they did nothing for hours. Don't know about you, but I would notice a dead guy sitting next to me.

Mid, quit jumping the gun. This was posted for what? , not even one day and you are accusing others of being hypocrites. Sorry, but I don't sit and surf VV 24/7, its more like 12/7.

I think the fact this man perished is sad, but the fact that apparently having a heart attack is so similar to pentecostal behavior is pretty funny in my mind.

You know me Voro. I could give a shit about this guy. Sure it sucks someone died, but tens of thousands die everyday due to various things.

I just find it laughable how two-faced so many people here are. That's the only point I wanted to make. You can go back to bashing religious people...err wait...people who are religious who are Americans....err wait....people who are religious who aren't of a minority in any way....yes that's it.

I think both cases are absolutly hilarious. Dimebag because his name is dimebag, and this dude because it is so Ironic.

I didn't really care about dimebag nor make any post bemoaning his demise. Death can be tragic, but also ridiculous under certain situations and this one totally fits the bill under the latter.

Need a tissue? What makes this amusing is not the fact that he's a dead Christian, but the fact that he was in a situation to be saved, yet wasn't due in part to the nature of those pentacostal "praise Jebus!" gatherings in addition to being surrounded by a bunch of stupid inobservant rubes.

Personally what I think is sad is that no one did anything. According to his beliefs the man couldn't have died at a better time, he was praising God. What is sad to me though it that might not have had to meet his maker yet if his ideas on religion weren't so... "out there."
