Anyone for a game of Mornington Crescent?

No holds barred discussion. Someone train you and steal your rare spawn? Let everyone know all about it! (Not for the faint of heart!)

Anyone for a game of Mornington Crescent?

Post by Drolgin Steingrinder »

I'd suggest we play Trumpington's variation, any objections?

(As everyone knows, Trumpington's usually gives us a defensive game in which positional play is of the essence. Players should take care not to become blocked, boxed or cornered.)

I'll start off with Allbright's Opening:

Totterige and Whetstone (fully expecting a Regent's Street follow up)

Piccadilly Circus would be too direct, not to mention it violates Hammett's ground rule of line infraction. I choose Leicester Square as it is between 10:00AM and 4:00PM. Otherwise, obviously, Great Portland Street would be the wiser choice.

Nice one, Adela. Going with Dollis Hill, resetting all boundaries, collecting two tokens and putting Elephant and Castle in knip.

If I were to perform a quarter-strile to Ealing Broadway, would that put me in spoon?

I'm used to Chicago Crescent, it's always tough jumping in on a game with traditional Mornington Crescent rules. Is the Piccadilly Ruling in effect?

Sure drol. I stretch south to Moorgate.

I also call nonspecific detailing penalty on Spang as he has reached the minimum penalty requirement of three violations (one for each of his entries). Subtract one token.

Sylvus,

Trumpington's guidelines demonstrate that all players have the option to folly out of a spoon by penalty of a one-stretch restriction on their next move.

My mistake, I completely skimmed over Drolgin's post and missed that we were playing Trumpington's Variation.

Drolgin is definitely in a predicament with Dollis Hill being known for Spiralling Loops, and the fact that tokens cannot be employed on a Dollis loop-break. I would attempt to break it if it wouldn't weaken my own defense. Sorry Drolgin.

My apologies, I should've stated the full ruleset beforehand, I'm so used to playing with CFRMC-certified players that I took it as read.

1) No, quarter-striling to Ealing Broadway would not place you in spoon (unless of course you had been shunted through a knip'd station and were out of tokens). You can only be spooned by illegal interchange entry angle, overuse of one hand in crossing the river, or by another player using a non-reversed straddle on an adjacent triple-interchangeable line.

2) Default rules are Chalk Farm '84 (excluding Littleton's Parabola, Jespersen's Circumference and, of course, without Thornton's Third Amendment). As such, the Piccadilly Ruling is only in partial effect, allowing for double-shunts on yellow and green lines, but banning the Watling Variation (thus, no huffing). See Trellis v. Sandagle '82 and Brook-Taylor v. Rushton '77.

With Spang on Liverpl St. I should be able to shunt back to Blackfriars at the cost of two tokens, opening up Embankment. I realize this weakens my defense, but I *hate* getting stuck in the Dollis Hill loop. But oh well - sometimes you have to take chances.

Opening Embankment is also a rather agressive move, as it allows traversal from Yellow/Green to Black or even Brown. Very impressive tactic, although I would have thought you to be more of a Baker Street kind of guy (especially if you are attempting the ever-so-crafty Pendleton's Ploy).

If you'd simul-posted with Truant (that is, getting your MC bid in before his crafty little Wembley Park move, then yes, you would have. But with Truant at Wembley park, me at Blackfriars (and as Hoarmurath noted, with yellow to brown lines open), you would be in huff with a Mornington Crescent call there. Instead of winning, you're in huff, with Wembley Park and Chipping Ongar now in full knit, no reversal.

Oh, and astute observation Hoarmurath. Baker Street indeed! *wink wink* Methinks you've read your Trelliis v. Sharpton and the teams game of the MCWC 1988?
