HP Printers

I hate them.

With that out of the way, I have two - a standard printer and a printer/fax. At more or less the same time, they have both stopped functioning. The carriage on both slides all the way over to the left, then stops, and then makes this obscene grinding sound that is reminiscent of a spoon trapped in a garbage disposal.

I've checked for the non existant paper jam that both are reporting, and I've manually pushed the carriage on both to the other side without feeling any place that it may be getting stuck.

Anything I can do for either of them aside from seeing how well they burn?

Really? Mine has been going strong for the past 7 years now and no complaints other than ridiculous ink prices.

HP is the only acceptable printer.

Carry both to the inkjet repair facility, normally a large green or brown rectangular container in the parking lot. Then go buy a Lexmark laser, problem solved.

Inkjets are worth just what you pay (and pay and pay and pay) for them.

the cost per page of operating a HP printer is substantially higher than a Canon or Epson.

If you are using a printer for basic household use, you should check out a Canon or Epson printer.

I have enjoyed HP printers for years, and if it is my company paying for it, I'll order a HP. But on my dollar, I bought a Canon printer for home. Pixma IP4000R to be exact. Nothing super fancy, but does the job.

Initial cost is cheaper, cost for ink is cheaper.

Think of the amount of money HP spends on advertising on TV, in stores, hiring people to walk around the stores to sell you their products. That cost is passed on to you =).

We replaced a Brother all in one printer/fax/scanner that seemed to eat color ink cartriges at a rate similar to a stoner going through Ho-Hos with an HP 5510 all in one and it rocks. MUCH better consumables life, cleaner design, far easier setup, and even installs a print-to-fax printer driver option. I have a fairly old HP 1100 laser that I upgraded to the "A" version by getting a scanner on ebay and it freakin rocks. Thing is built like a tank and works flawlessly.

I highly recommend only HP printers.

I can tell you that Epson printers are worse. I haven't found better than HP. That BTW is not really an endorsement. I've had HP printers go so bad they crash the computer attached to them....

While the info so far is good, and appears to be the start of a HP/AntiHp flame, this isn't giving me any tips on how to fix it.

Anything in that vein before I fill both with lighterfluid and have some fun?

As Voro said, if you are not worried about quality, Canon is pretty good too.

As for wanting to know what to do with them? Nothing really, unless you know someone who is HP certified and can fix it for free. Otherwise, it will cost quite a bit.

Seriously Akaran, have you checked the HP knowledge base for this type of issue?

I can tell you it isn't limited to HP printers, I've seen Canons, Brothers and Epsons all do the same thing you describe. Sometimes it would work to physically move the carriage over a bit, sometimes it was caused by a stripped gear. Printers be so cheap now that IMHO it isn't worth your time to even diagnose the problem, just trash em and get a new one.

I had a Canon Multipass 5000 that did nothing but cause conflicts with my other hardware. HP is alright and it is what we have now but I think you are paying more for a name. Printers are relatively cheap these days so I'd look into buying a new one.

Ak and anyone else who needs a laser:

Lexmark's E232 is going on sale in staples for I think 129.99 after rebate at Staples... I have't had any complaints with it as of yet and honestly they're a toner is also a lot cheaper than HP.. IMO Lexmark makes a great printer, even with just talking to their rep and using them myself (He was awesome and gave me a 6250 photo AIO http://www.lexmark.com/uncomplicate/pro ... _1,00.html

Wow, I can't believe all the

HP are getting. I've never had any positive experiences with HP peripherals, whether it's been scanners, drives, printers - they've all been craptastic, and the support has been abysmal. I actually don't think I've seen such horrid support from any company before.

I agree, but they are the still best IMHO. Like I said, this is not an endorsement. I've had them crash my computer several times...(How does a USB device stop a computer from working??)

HP printers are the best.

5 years of selling computers at Circuit City, hardly any HP printers ever came in defective or needing service. 1 out of every 3 Epson, Lexmark, and Canon printers came in. I wouldn't even think about owning anything but an HP printer.

They've become a much crappier machine.. I see a good 50% of them come back because of something breaking.. It's a pain in the ass too because it's just costing my dept. money..Of all the Lexmark's I've sold in the past year I had one come back because it was a lemon.
