the salt/pepper enigma

Post by cadalano »

In a set of salt/pepper shakers, which of the shakers has only one hole (or less holes)?

Obviously not all shakers have disparate numbers of holes, but hypothetically..

Most sources suggest there is no right answer. What do you think?

Please feel free to explain the rationale of your response.

edit: Just realized that the poll question is a bit confusing. Read the first line of this post if you are baffled! (I can't edit the poll Q)

Voted for Salt because you don't want to load your meal with salt, you just need a bit for taste. Pepper on the other hand...good stuff.

Both of mine are mills, one hole each.

Always use fresh pepper! Get a mill and some peppercorns, do it now.

Salt - Sea Salt or Kosher Salt for cooking. Trader Joes has these cheap.

As far as the poll, traditionally salt goes in the single-hole shaker.

pepper clogs the holes easier and thus requiring more space to exit the said shaker while salt flows more easily needing fewer holes.

I use mills for both too. Anything less is uncivilized.

What puzzles me is those little packets of salt/pepper at fast food places... why does 1 salt packet have enough salt for 10-15 meals yet you need at least 3-4 packets for enough pepper?

As for the poll, salt always goes in the shaker with the fewest holes...

I wouldn't have it any other way! The only time I use that generic stuff is when I need a lot of it for making soups.

As a side note, I rarely use salt or butter in or on any of my foods. I prefer to use other spices.

And make sure it's one that crushes, not a grinder

Sea salt goes on the table in a mill, kosher stays in the box above the stove for cooking.

Has anyone here unscrewed the top of the salt shaker at a restaurant so the next person dumps the whole contents on their food?

Ah, but what do you do with those sealed plastic salt shakers? We used to spin a penny on the table and, while it was still spinning upright, slam the plastic salt shaker down on it. The next person to pick it up would get a giant pile of salt on the table.

Salt has fewest holes.

But I use only sea salt and fresh black pepper, so its a non issue for me.
