Fraternities
I've begun rushing at a fraternity and I've been there constantly for about two and a half weeks now. The house kicks ass and I was just wondering if any of you were apart of a frat or sorority (looking more for frat guys) when you were in college. And if you guys got any funny stories about pledging or what you did to pledges, that'd be cool to hear as well. Thanks!

I was in a fraternity in college. The chapter was on campus previously, but apparently had some drug problems back in the early 80's. I helped restart the chapter on campus and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I made friends through fraternity connections that I still keep in touch with today (as in, visiting at New Years, Birthday parties, etc.)
Most people have an unfavorable view of greek life on campus that's facilitated by what they see in movies. Yes, there are parties and girls (fringe benefits!), but there are a lot of things you don't see, such as community service projects, honing of social skills, business practices, etc.

Greek life at my college was basically nonexistent, no "Greek Row" or any real frat houses to speak of, officers generally used their apartments as meeting places. I knew a couple guys that were cool that were brothers of Alpha Gamma Chi and I signed up for pledge in 1988. As I went through pledge my grades took a nosedive so I had to bow out with 3 weeks left.
Great bunch of guys that would have been fun to hang with, and this was a service (not social) frat that actually DID things to help people in the community, like blood drives, Habitat for Humanity, etc.
It did kind of bother me that nobody from the frat really talked to me after I dropped out of pledge, even the guys that I had been friends wth before. I didn't really care as I was totally focused on my grades after that.

Nope
At Texas A&M, its pretty much frowned upon to be in a frat/sorority, ie, there were t-shirts that people often wore saying, "Rent a friend, join a frat." I certainly hung out with that crowd and quite often went to their parties/bars. I was an equal opportunity social vulture.

Frats are huge at my school, we even spawned 4 of them. I recently pledged too Rivera and so far I've been happy with my choice. Also, with regards to the rented friend issue, most of the kids in my pledge class seemed to have gone to highschool with some brothers, etc. So, along with the fringe benefits it also allows for leadership and service oppurtunites--not to mention a cheap place to live.
just my feelings.

The college I went to, Hendrix http://www.hendrix.edu didn't have frats. Instead your dorm functioned in some ways like a frat. Have a lot of friends in different frats all over the US but never missed it, was having too much fun

I went to school at UCSB in the early 90s and the 'greek' community constituted about 5% of the collegiate population... I am sure it is somewhat the same now. Santa Barbara at least was a HUGE party town, especially the Isla Vista area (high rent slums). The frats had 40-keggers and a paid band, about 20-50 other non-frat 4 bedroom houses with 12 occupants had a keg of Meister Brau and a garage band.
I had the most fun hosting said cheap beer and garage band parties as well as attending far too many of them.
Guess it depends on the culture where you are.... in retrospect, I can see how being a member of a fraternity can be beneficial, due to having an instant common bond with people down the line who you do not even know yet. And there are the sorority chicks as a bonus.
Go with your gut always. Just make sure to tour the frathouse before committing, there is a very large disparity in living conditions...ah but what the fuck, you are going to be in college, so nevermind the mess.

I had a tough time adjusting to college during the first couple monthes due to getting involved with some bad crowds, getting in some trouble, etc. I ditched them and I realized that all the other cliques had formed. I'm a frat guy at heart as well, so I jumped head first, first day back I started rushing my favorite frat and its been 2 and a half weeks, I gained about 50 new friends, began partying again, gotten several girls in mind and new ones all the time. It seems awesome, though I do realize the work will begin once pledgeship starts, but hey, its a brotherhood and everyone has to pull their weight. And everyone has to pay their dues.

I was not a big fan of the greek life when I started college. My brother was in a frat (which frat's hate you calling them I guess), so I would just goto their parties, but I didn't rush or pledge them. I just used them for beer, parties, whatever. I saw how they treated each other face to face...and then what happened in the background...not cool.
AFter my tenure at college, I realized how abysmal my life would have been had I not met the amount of people I did on my own. If you are socially inept, or just have an issue with meeting people, I think fraternities and sororities are great. (I admit there are exceptions).
For me personally, I knew enough fraternity brothers as friends to go to their parties and skip the lines....but I never had to pay the dues, or go thru pledging, and all that other subliminaly ghey shit....
But hey, each to his own. Don't forget your BMW, kahki pants even when sleeping, Polo shirt, Docker shoes, and everything else preppy and yuppy. (again, there are some great houses, and I hate to generalize, I just hope for your sake the place you are rushing is more like the smaller houses of "uknowns" who seem to have more friends outside the house than inside...)
edit: I forgot one of my girlfriends favorite terms for sorority girls: Frat Matress. My absolute favorite.
edit2: Oh, I also forgot that I graduated college in 2001...so things may have changed...Not sure if frats still all own stock in Polo and Nautica...it may be something else now....I would stay away from the preppy frats.

I was in Kappa Alpha when I was in college for a good semester and a half.
I got in fairly easy due to the fact I was a 4 time Legacy and they generally don't deny those types of requests. I ended up leaving because I couldn't handle the racist bigotry and behavior of my fellow frat brothers. Fraternities have their uses however, a good one is great for business contacts and networking after you graduate college. If you feel like shoveling out the extra cash every year, join a frat and have fun just make sure they are the right fit for you and not something you're willing to put up with for 4 years so that you can have some contacts later on in life.

While I didn't join a fraternity mostly due to running track, if I had to go back and do it again, I definitely would for the reason above. It really helps to have outside contacts from as many places as possible. Forging a network of contacts takes a lot of work and being a brother in a frat gives you an immediate leg up in that department.Sylvos wrote:I was in Kappa Alpha when I was in college for a good semester and a half.

I never joined a frat, but I did join with many sorority girls.

I won't sit here and bash frats but I see no need for them as long as you can make friends on your own. I realize some are in situations where they may need to join a frat or sorority. If you go to college and know absolutely nobody, I can imagine it might be tough to meet people for some. As long as you're not joining it for the same reasons you would join a religion...to find people that will be nice to you because you are part of the group.
GDI (God Damn Independent) was the route I took in college and I can't imagine that I would have had more fun in a frat. Like some of the people above, I used the I-Tappa-Keggas for beer once in awhile but frat parties weren't any better than non frat parties where I was.
There's nothing wrong with a group of guys or girls banding together to have some fun but I found the lameness of frat life similar to what you would go through if you enlisted in the army when you were smart enough to be an officer...you'd go nuts taking orders from retards that have authority only because of time spent in a position and not due to intelligence or performance.
THANK YOU SIR! MAY I HAVE ANOTHER!?
When is rush week for teh fnord?

I was a Chi Omega for 4 years at Eastern Kentucky University..we had a big greek society. Lots may frown on frats and sororities but you meet some people that will grow to be life long friends with you. I still hang out with my old sisters from time to time, they actually keep in touch with me more than my friends from High School did that even went to the same college as me. My last year we got put on probation for hazing, wasn't fun times. So my senior year as a Chi O sucked kinda, hopefully you dont have to go through the same thing. Have fun!

My closest friends are still fraternity brothers.
Each school, chapter and reason for joining are diffrent. Was literally the best time of my life and would not change a thing about it.
Was a rush chairman for two years and accumulated the most diverse group of people imaginable. Was a wonderul experience in every way.
Actually writing a book on those years. Will be graphic I fear.
Just my two cents.

I never had sexual relations with a goat that didn't instigate it first.
Seriously though, that's got to be one of the oldest rumors. I've seen it joked about and we even had a plastic blow up sheep that one of the brother's walked around with, but I've never heard or seen something like that during initiation rituals.

shrug KA's at UT were fine, aside from a small portion of racist assholes, they could throw down a pretty good party. We'd constantly wage war on SAE because their frat was across the street and the constant game of Kidnap the Keg was always in effect. Best is when you get caught and they made you run naked down Frat Row with the enemy frats letters painted on your chest.
Thankfully I never got caught =) Best parties ever were the Souther Balls, where you'd rent a confederate or union soldier uniform (dependant on where you are from) and have your date dress up like a Southern Belle of old antebellum South (read Scarlet O'Hara). Those were awesome parties.

i do miss going to formals and stuff. i don't miss midnight formal meetings when i had tests the next morning at 8. ><
i ended up leaving my sorority because i didn't enjoy paying $150 to skip out on a night of rush song practice so that i could study. especially since we were on social probation for having the lowest GPA on the row for 4 years. and since, being on the disciplinary board, i just to reprimand the person charging me the fine about her grades because OMG a 2.0 is hard.
you get what you put into it. i never lived in the house, and i was too busy with schoolwork and other friends to spend all my time at our house, so the bulk of the girls never really felt like sisters to me.

Talking about houses reminded me how retarded PA is with soroties....
At penn state, sororities cannot have houses (all of PA actually), so they were housed in the dorms with their own floors in said dorm buildings. So they just put their letters up in the windows.
Anyways, the reason they are not allowed houses like the frats, you ask? Well simple, really. Because in PA, a house with more than like 8 girls in it is still, by law, a brothel....and is illegal. Yay for stupid law revision (or lack there of).

We have that here too Kluden. The sororities all have suites which are just really nice dorms. It actually doesn't work out that badly for them because it's as cheap as dorm housing, nicer, and its cleaned for them daily. Of course, they cant throw parties there, but that's what annexes and renting bars is for. =D

They got that law in certain counties, but the really ridiculous thing is that, that same county has the same rule for men too, a gigolo house for 8 or more men.

I'm a KA at my school and we definitely have wars with the SAE chapter here. Many great battles have been fought between us, but we win most of the time because we have the most athletic fraternity (everyone plays a sport for the college).Sylvos wrote:shrug KA's at UT were fine, aside from a small portion of racist assholes, they could throw down a pretty good party.
