I agree, it was alright, but nothing great if you ask me. Probably doesn't help that I absolutely cannot stand Leonardo DiCrappio.

They're trying to get Scorsese an oscar it seems.

Actually, that's a pretty good list of best picture nominees. Haven't, nor will I see finding neverland and I intend to see million dollar baby w/in the next couple of weeks, but I enjoyed the other 3.
I also hope Jamie Foxx gets best actor, he was terrific in Ray.

Wow. ANd so many of those movies I never ever had any inclination to see.

Further.
WTF? Accidentialy in love for Shrek2? F that. "I Need a Hero" about an hour later in the same flick is REALLY BLOODY RIGHT HIGH in the list of perfect music scores in a movie for a given time. Fragging all. Bloody morons they are.

The actual name for the category is: Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original song), which makes I need a hero, void.

Kate Winslet - ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND

She did a good job in the movie. I say give it to her!

Taking a look at the nominations, it was a very weak year for the film industry.

The only movies I saw that were nominated for anything were Troy and Collateral.

Of course I probably saw about five new movies this year so that shouldn't really be a surprise or anything.

ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
Johnny Depp - FINDING NEVERLAND

Whee, Hollywood love Depp again. Havent seen Finding Neverland, but from the trailer alone, i think its a role he would be great it. Hope he get it.

Leonardo DiCaprio - THE AVIATOR
If anyone even consider giving DiCaprio an Oscar, they should be shot. He should be on a permanent ban from any movie rewards for Titanic.

Jamie Foxx - RAY
Havent seen it, but cant see Jamie Foxx as Oscar material, judged on his earlier films and acting abilities showed there.

ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Alan Alda - THE AVIATOR

Isnt there rule that people that never had a decent role since their 70'es sitcom cant get an Oscar?

Jamie Foxx - COLLATERAL
See my earlier comment.

ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
Kate Winslet - ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND

She got my vote, im actually surprised Jim Carrey didnt get a nomination too (not in the actress part of course).

ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Natalie Portman - CLOSER

Well, she would get my vote pr default if it hadnt been for Winslets role this year.

[/i]BEST PICTURE
THE AVIATOR[/i]
Lets see, a movie starring DiCaprio?. Nah, i think we should let this one slide, if it get an Oscar, people might start claiming its good, like they did with Titanic.

FINDING NEVERLAND
Of the movies mentioned, this would get my vote.

WRITING (ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY)
ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND

Clearly the winner here. Notice the price name, "Original". That movie sure was original.

THE INCREDIBLES
I loved this movie, but i still think that Eternal Sunshine beat it, story wise.

I really think you're off base on the Jamie fox comment. There are more, but three movies I can think of off the top of my head I think he did great in: Redemption, Ray, Collateral.

I think a large reason for the hard-on Hollywood has for The Aviator is the part that Katherine Hepburn plays in it. It's a way of celebrating her through Kate Blanchett. I haven't seen many of these movies, so I'll withhold my judgement until downloads have completed!

Redemption was really good. Didn't see Ray yet unfortunately. Collateral was ok the first time. It's not something worth seeing more than twice though; not by any fault of the acting, it's just not that exciting of a movie.

Think from all the movies listed, I've only seen 5 of them. Least we won't have to wonder about next years winners.

I am more upset that Paul Giamatti didn't get nominated for Sideways. On a side note, I find it humourous that Michael Moore was shut out.

Predictions:

ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE: Jamie Foxx - RAY
Don Cheadle a close second.

ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE: Morgan Freeman - MILLION DOLLAR BABY
Looks like a close one, so I think they will want to give the nod to Freeman because he has been so good in so many roles, but never recognized

ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE: Imelda Staunton - VERA DRAKE
A real horse race. The Academy likes everyone on the list, but I think they will go this way. A few years ago, they realized they overlooked Judi Dench in MRS BROWN, and awarded her the best supporting Oscar the next year for basically a cameo role in SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE. I think they would want to avoid overlooking another great performance from another lesser known movie from the UK.

ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE: Natalie Portman - CLOSER
Another horse race: when in doubt, the Academy sides with youth for supporting roles.

ANIMATED FEATURE FILM: THE INCREDIBLES
A slam dunk, I would think

ART DIRECTION: THE AVIATOR
Looks like they have a woody for this movie

CINEMATOGRAPHY: THE AVIATOR
See above

COSTUME DESIGN: THE AVIATOR
Ditto

DIRECTING: MILLION DOLLAR BABY
The Academy likes this movie, so this is how they will honor it. They also like Clint.

DOCUMENTARY FEATURE: SUPER SIZE ME
Pure guess

DOCUMENTARY SHORT SUBJECT: THE CHILDREN OF LENINGRADSKY
Pure guess. I wish PIGEONMEN was nominated, but I am biased: one of the two kids that made it grew up across the street.

FILM EDITING: THE AVIATOR
More piling on

FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM: YESTERDAY
Pure guess

MAKEUP: LEMONY SNICKET'S A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS
Guess

MUSIC (SCORE): HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN
The Academy loves John Williams

MUSIC (SONG): "Accidentally In Love" - SHREK 2
Guess

BEST PICTURE: THE AVIATOR

SHORT FILM (ANIMATED): BIRTHDAY BOY
Pure guess

SHORT FILM (LIVE ACTION): 7:35 IN THE MORNING
Pure guess.

SOUND EDITING: THE INCREDIBLES
Guess

SOUND MIXING: THE AVIATOR
More piling on

VISUAL EFFECTS: HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN

WRITING (ADAPTED SCREENPLAY): SIDEWAYS
I think they want to give a nod to this movie somehow

WRITING (ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY):THE AVIATOR
Tough call. I wouldn't be surprised to see HOTEL ROWANDA or THE INCREDIBLES tabbed here. When in doubt, pile on.

Animated film: Shrek2
Visual effects: HP, more than likely. I, Robot was good - but not that good.

Can't agree. I loved both, but Shrek was leaps and bounds past the Increds. The effects were better, the story was better, the music was better.. it was just a better movie.

Not really. Shrek 2 was just Shrek 1 with a different story. I'm not really sure how that's better!

Sideways is probably the best picture of the year and the one everyone will remember down the road, but it won't be winning shit at the Oscars. The academy awards are more about popularity and hollywood circle jerking than any meaningful measure of quality. To that end, I expect Aviator to sweep most of the major awards, even though Foxx should take home the win and Sideways should trump in most other catagories.
War is an option whose time has passed. Peace is the only option for the future. At present we occupy a treacherous no-man's-land between peace and war, a time of growing fear that our military might has expanded beyond our capacity to control it and our political differences widened beyond our ability to bridge them. . . .

Short of changing human nature, therefore, the only way to achieve a practical, livable peace in a world of competing nations is to take the profit out of war.
--RICHARD M. NIXON, "REAL PEACE" (1983)

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, represents, in the final analysis, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."

Has Johnny Depp got an Oscar yet? Surely he is long overdue.....even though Secret Window was absolute pish.

Hero wasn't all that exciting to me. Maybe for Art Direction or Cinematography perhaps. It also wasn't a 2004 movie. It came out in the US last year but it was released overseas in 2002.

Hero was like watching Crouching Tiger on crack. All of the Peter Pan flying around by the fighters was out of control.

The mystique of the asian warrior drama has played itself out and now we need quality movies beyond the over dramatized sword fights to make a movie worthwhile.

Jackie Chan's "Legend of the Drunken Master" had more entertaining action than Hero.
