House of Flying Daggers

Post by Keverian FireCry »

Having gone seen Hero with high expectations and being dissatisfied...this time it was the exact opposite. This movie is absolutely beautiful and the acting is MUCH better than it was in Hero(the main characters atleast).

Though there are certainly some plot-holes and weaknesses, this movie will enthral you with it's appreciation of nature's beauty and of Zhang Ziyi's beauty(omg!!) :D . The character developement though still lacking in some respects, is far better than it was in Hero. I really felt for the characters and even got misty-eyed in a few scenes...Hero left me empty and somewhat exhausted...

The natural backdrop for most of the scenes in this movie range from autumnal forests of red/yellow/orange to misty green bamboo forests to dreamlike snowscapes to sweeping fields of grass...

Oh and of course you want to know about the fight scenes...Well, they are atleast as good as Hero, if not better. The fights were just amazing. Superhuman archery by the male lead(Chinese Legolas), and magical daggers that whiz like boomerangs through the air...and of course GREAT sword fight scenes for the most part(couple times they seem like a play rather than a fight, but still cool). Not to mention some pretty good twists, when you really don't expect it.

Rating: 9/10

If you liked Hero a lot, DO NOT MISS THIS ON THE BIG SCREEN!!! If you didn't like Hero so much, give this a chance...and still see in theatre. Seeing it on your average size TV just would be a shame really. This is that type of movie that is exponentially better on a big screen.

P.S. I never saw Hero on big screen, maybe if I had I would have liked it more...maybe it would even rival this...I'll have to find someone with a huge tv or projector to see it again...

The sword "fights" are highly entertaining and very well choreographed. Historical swordsmanship in duels and battles were over in a matter of seconds however.
