Newer, lower population servers will probably be next, or at least that's my guess.

last time I logged into EQ it was desolate compared to even six months ago. I see pve server consolidation happening before year end.

Oh and Brenlo can suck my fucking dick.

It's possible. I don't think it's going to be real soon, but it will have to happen eventually. When it does, I certainly hope that they do it in the way of "We are closing these X servers, players on those servers are being given a one time free server transfer to the server of their choice" instead of, "We are closing these X servers and all players will be moved to the XYZ server".

It would seriously suck to go from what people are getting used to (lack of competition for spawns for example) to having a sudden influx of a few thousand people.. even for the lowest populated servers.

I'm not totally sure. From what I've heard, there are a number of pve servers that are really struggling with numbers atm. The older, larger servers will probably not be merged for a very long time, but I can see a few of those that are currently struggling getting consolidated this summer. There was this tidbit snipped from the "Producer's Letter" posted on the EQLive forums today:
We are aware that with the recent release of new MMO's that some of our fans have moved on and we wish them the best of luck. We have noted that this has had an impact on some server populations, most noticeably our PVP servers. The PvP community has asked that we further explore the idea of server mergers and to that end, we’ve put a poll for PvP players asking if servers were to be merged, which rule set they would most like to play under. More details for you on that soon. Although we are satisfied with the current population of most other servers, we will take a look at each after the release of EverQuest: Dragons of Norrath and identify whether any additional mergers will be needed.
I definitely agree that a freebie /movelog to a variety of medium-population servers would probably be the best way to go, though. Give people some options, I say.
