Keyhole - satellite imagery

Keyhole - satellite imagery
Edit:
Bump, half a year after trying Keyhole and being amazed at the program (this was just after Google had bought the company, but hadn't done anything with it yet)
Google finally released http://earth.google.com a bit ago, the program is essentially Keyhole, but this version is free, and faster. Its like a 7 mb download, well worth it for anyone interested in satellite imagery (high resolution still images of course, not live)

I like some of the features this thing has, and I've been meaning to try it out. Here are some free alternatives (that obviously don't have all the features that keyhole has, but are still good):

Considering the imagery is up to 10 years old... not good.Desolet wrote:Thats really quite interesting, how effective would it be at seeing heavy traffic on say major highways and what not? I imagine that would be a really nice way to check major road congestion, especially during these holiday travel times.
unless you're Dr. Sam Beckett.

I checked out the Microsoft alternative posted above and the images were from 1997. I found my residence and place where I work but the area surrounding them has totally changed in the past 7+ years.Fash wrote:Considering the imagery is up to 10 years old... not good.Desolet wrote:Thats really quite interesting, how effective would it be at seeing heavy traffic on say major highways and what not? Is the keyhole version as outdated? Stragi's building where he works doesn't even exist yet in these picts!

Keyhole states that their average images range from about 18 to 24 months old - some longer. I'm thinking at this time it would be too large scale of a project to provide real-time satellite imagery on a program like this one. If you look at las vegas, and have been there recently, there's quite a lot missing from the northern part of the strip for example. I'm intrigued as to what Google has in store for Keyhole Corp., they recently bought it
Even still, its amazing zooming in on places you've never been to and looking around. The payment isnt monthly though, its $30 USD a year which is pretty reasonable if you like to travel.
We mapped out our trip from Alberta to Arizona today following the exact road through the cities and such. You can create waypoints, view the road names, print out map sections and everything.. easier to use Expedia, but this is just awesome detail

If anyone downloaded it, click this link (either an eta or kml file) and it moves to a specific location inside the program
This one, is an airforce base (or aircraft graveyard?) in Tuscon.. look at the hundreds of planes!

The keyhole BBS community is here, there are tonnes more links like these of people who find stuff worth mentioning. Its nice because it moves the program view for you and automatically zooms in on the location, anywhere in the world

Neat, but what a cock knocker...
*I'm aware that removing spaces in the URLs would be helpful, and I'll try to do that as time permits. But it would be a great deal more helpful if software engineers would resist the terribly short sighted temptation to hijack common text characters (like the space character) in user accessible text for use as control code, thereby handcuffing and handicapping the user's ability to gracefully manage systems. For crying out loud, background your code where possible, and where impossible, restrict your code characters to genuinely special characters. Don't hijack common text! (Think user friendly, like Apple does.)
