Can't go wrong with a good Merlot, ever :)

I like Sterling and Franciscan, both are about $25 a bottle

Depending on the food involved, I'd take a average Pinot Noir over a good Merlot almost any time :) As Pherr says, though, one can't really suggest wines without knowing the menu and budget.

I am no sommelier, but here are a few options...

$12-30: Sterling Cab or Merlot
$10-15: Kendall Jackson Cab, Merlot or Chard
$9-12: Ravenwood Merlot
$2.99: Charles Shaw Cab...perfect for parties and damn good too! :D

Agree that pinot noirs are damn good wines. However, as Cano pointed out, I too am no sommelier by any stretch. Now if you want microbrewed beer advice I'm yer guy.
