Ok my neighbor has an issue, a rather major issue

He installed a DVD burner, no problem there, he reboots, everything works fine, then he installs roxio ez cd crator 6.0, reboots and gets an error about windows being unable to read some long ass fucking number from hell right after it asks for the password. So being a slight dork, I try a few things, I look in setup and his primary slave reads 4X8X32 and secondary slave reads the DVD drive, now mine ain't set up like that so it caught my eyes... any ideas, suggestions

Uninstall roxio and see if the error goes away.

Then install Nero

I bought the full version of Nero, it's about the nicest package around. It does a whole lot more than just burn disks.

Yes I could have downloaded it, but if people don't pay the small operators they go away. Then we're stuck with the bloated crap the MS is trying to foist off on us, that never seems to do quite what you wanted or in the way you intended.

Ok to be more clear after the error message, windows doesn't boot, it shuts down

Have you tried booting to safe mode? Can you use the command prompt options to boot to a restore from before the installation?

That kind of error message generally reflects a hardware failure and not software.

Try hitting f8 after the computer startup screens, but before the Windows XP startup screen, to get a list of boot options. Select "safe mode" and see if the computer will run in safe mode.

Once the computer is running try to run "scandisk" and fix any possible errors on the hard drive.

It may be helpful to open the case and see if any components were jarred or moved during the installation of the cd burner. Press on all the cards somewhat firmly to make sure they are seated in their sockets. Do the same for the memory sticks (small circuit boards in sockets on the system board). Also make sure all the ribbon cables going from the system board to the drives are seated firmly in their sockets.

The first thing you need to do is determine whether it is a hardware or software issue.

1- Boot to safe mode, as advised. If you can, then it is *probably* a software issue. Try removing the sofware while in safe mode and rebooting. If you can boot fine after removing the software, then perhaps try Nero as suggested.

2- If you cannot boot to safe mode the problem is either OS based or a hardware failure. Try removing the DVD drive. Try reseating all the cables, cards, and memory.

If all fails, look for OS support, but only as a last measure- MS Tech sucks.

Can often recover from OS stuff ups in windows XP by booting from the CD, starting an install, then selecting the recovery option.. repatch w/ SP2, etc.
