And the best part? Martin Freeman (Tim from BBC's The Office) is playing Arthur Dent!

Can't wait.

Bump so someone doesn't create a new thread after seeing it today. It's getting mixed reviews so guess you gotta take your chances...
Hitchhiker is bordering on the brink of a recommendation from me, but I'm afraid I cannot fold. The film will most likely please Hitchhiker regulars, but for the rest of us it may leave quite a bit to be desired. I only wish that the film had lived up to the nuggets that it set forth in its opening sequence. What a scene to build on, but alas we only get a slightly above-average, manic studio offering.

I haven't read the books so it will be interesting to get opinions from both readers and non readers of the series that see the movie.

I enjoyed the movie, it was a lot of fun. I read the book a few times through the years.

This movie will be much like the book, you either enjoy the humor or you dont, no real grey area I think.

I've been through the books, and the movie is different enough to be "fresh". I liked it....hell, the star wars trailor and the opening song is worth the price of admission :)

Character development feels very rushed in the film, but the overall storyline is ok and fun. Definitely good brit type humor....if you like that stuff.

Loved the humor. Decent casting and acting. Loved the song (and the Star Wars trailor!). Hated some of the changes they made from the book. The movie felt rushed and it didn't seem to work 100% for me.

Edit: Rushed in the way that it didn't feel like the characters were developed, they skipped a LOT of things that made sense in the book and well.. dunno how to explain it but I am torn on the movie.

Saw it tonight and I've read the books. I really enjoyed it. The last half of the movie did seem a bit rushed and "forced" but the first few scenes of the movie were very well done. I went with a friend who hadn't read the book and didn't know the storyline, and she giggled during the entire movie.

Marvin could have been expanded into comic genius, but he was well done for the parts he was in.

The casting was well done also in my opinion. I had reservations when I heard Mos Def was going to be Ford, but he did an excellent job. Zooey was cute as a button as Trillian even if the dialogue was a little flat at times. Zaphod, well.. Sam Rockwell played him with an interesting angle. During the movie, I compared Zaphod to a cross between George Bush and Elvis.

8 out of 10 in my opinion.

Just the first one "hitchikers guide to the galaxy".

I have read the book and I saw the film tonight, loved it :)

They have changed it in bits so as to fill up the 2 hours but I really liked it, they did it justice and didn't comprimise on the humour (although they lost a level of subtlety)

8/10

So far, the quality of the movie seems like this would have been better suited as a weekly TV series. It has that budget feel to it after watching the first 30 minutes or so.

Went and saw it yesterday, funny in places but didn't care for it overall.

If you read the book it was too close too the storyline for the changes they made to work very well. If you hadn't read the books parts of it were funny, but didn't really make too much sense either.

I finally saw it last night...really liked it

I'd read the books, seen the tv shows, even played the infocom game back in the day

There were parts I missed from the books, but overall I thought it worked.

I was mostly bored. I'm sure Adams is rolling in his grave being credited with screenplay credits for this pile of crap. The characters were even more two-dimensional than in the book (character descriptions aren't exactly DA's strongest point), the storyline rushed and most of the smart humor in the books was completely ignored in favor of slapstick.

I'd be generous if I gave it a 5/10.

I saw it and I mostly agree with Drolgin. It just felt rushed to me. I enjoyed the books much more.

If it wasnt for the cheezy point and smile from the president guy, this would have been the worst movie I have seen since battlefield earth. Not funny at all, just boring and stupid.

Well, ended up seeing this last night instead of Crash (its start time was too late :( ). I mostly agree with Drolgin, but I got some genuine laughs out of it. But just remembering what little I do of the BBC series, I know they butchered the story. And their Marvin just didn't do it for me, other than Rickman doing the voice... that was great.

I desperately want automatic sighing doors tho.

The thing is, the screenplay was done while Douglas Adams was alive, by him, it was his idea for these changes.

If you look at the radio version, the TV show, the book and the film, they are all different in many little ways.

I agree completely.

And regarding the screenplay, I remember hearing in an interview on NPR that a professional screenwriter was brought in to 'tighten up' the story and emphasize the romantic elements between Arthur and Trillian.

Movie was fucking stupid; I don't care if Adams himself approved every slapstick scene in favor of the witty, smart humor in the books - it was still a bad decision.

God I was so disappointed and if I hadn't gone with friends I would've walked out about halfway through.

Visually, it was very well done. The story lost a lot from the books.
