Atlantis Discovered?
Atlantis
How many "discoveries" have come and gone now? Although, this one does look rather promising. Perhaps Plato was right on the money.

Here is some food for thought:
It is difficult for historians and archaeologists to believe Plato's description as there is little evidence of any accounts of Atlantis prior to his. Many have understood his account to be similar to the fall of Eden described in the Bible, describing the fall of a utopian society.
I believe that Plato described Atlantis as being beyond Gibraltor in his story, hence the name Atlantis (note the similarity to the Atlantic).
This sonar mapping has located some ruins 1,500 meters (nearly a mile) down on the sea floor, under several meters of sediment.
The man responsible for the find is an architect not a respected archaeologist, and the article contains a reference to his book. I suspect that he will make a pretty penny for his claim.

I have never heard of Atlantis being used to describe the Pict people. I would have thought Plato would have considered it noteworthy to mention that all adults had blue tatoos covering their bodies. For the technological advanced Greeks, I would have thought that such a primitive people wouldn't have even been of much interest to them.Voronwë wrote:i thought that Anthropologists considered the "Atlantis" referred to by the Greeks as the groups of people who lived in Britain and Ireland long long ago. Stonehenge types perhaps?

I thought there was a lot of interest taken in South America, there are a lot of giant monuments in brazil and in that area I've seen on a few shows that had Atlantis searchers buzzing.

Are you referring to the apparently manmade plateau? It is known that there was a civilization in this area, and Thor Heyerdahl has shown that it is theorhetically possible to traverse the Atlantic using Egptian level technology, but I would be somewhat skeptical that it would have been commonplace. I suppose that stranger things have happened (read: the polynesian migrations), but it is unlikely. It would, however, explain why Central and South American cultures had folk lore of caucasian people prior to the conquistadors.Rivera Bladestrike wrote:I thought there was OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of interest taken in South America, there are OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of giant monuments in brazil and in that area I've seen on a few shows that had Atlantis searchers buzzing.
There is also vague evidence of possible manmade structures in the Caribbean, but I have hard geologists suggesting that it is a natural phenomenom (much like the stones in Ireland, whose name elludes me).

i think the "manmade structures" in the Carribbean are actually blue-green algae calcifications.
i can't remember the word, something like Stromatolite, but they are these round coral type structures that are pretty big. I can see how somebody swimming over several of these might wonder if they were thousands of year old stones from a building or something.

Did you have to quote me before I could edit? heh
But yeah I read the article now, looks interesting, they'll have to get some deep sea equipment to check it out, but all the people in the world interested in finding the lost city, there should be no problems getting the cash for it.

I was actually refering to the imagery of what appears to be a long straight wall or road submerged in shallow water somewhere near the Bahamas. I haven't read or heard anything about it in over a year, so I couldn't offer more detail.Voronwë wrote:i think the "manmade structures" in the Carribbean are actually blue-green algae calcifications.

There is another Greek island that had a very large city-state on it that sank after the volcano that formed the island erupted. I imagine that this is a more common occurrence than we would like to think, and, if you believe (like me) that human civilization is older than 10,000 years, is something that is likely to have happened more than once.

That sounds like a "swamp gas" rational for UFOs applied to underwater structures Voro!Voronwë wrote:i think the "manmade structures" in the Carribbean are actually blue-green algae calcifications.
This looks like it's worth investigating:

This is a picture from the Okinawa Underwater Pyramid site though.
I watched a discovery channel thing on Atlantis. There are about 100 different theories as to where Atlantis was/is. Some say Ireland, some say south America, some say Plato's imagination.
I'd say this is worth investigating even if it isn't Atlantis. A submerged city? There is a great chance for new scientific data here.

There was a lot of knowledge that was lost during that time because of natural and man-made disasters. Everything that we find that helps us understand where we came from is important.
