The obvious answer is "fuck no", but I'm tempted to suggest we all vote yes just to see if Xzion's head explodes.

Has there been another attack on his watch? No. Then the answer to the poll is yes. Saying any differently is just plain blind and ignorant. But hey, that's what mostly infests this board.

John Ashcroft made sure marble boobies were not shown, he arrested about 5,000 people with muslim sounding names, got one conviction (which was overturned by the judge).

What a great job, I think my dog could have done just as well as he has done.

John fended off this great nation from the hordes of terrorist invaders who wanted to bring it down. You all owe him your gratitude.

He can spell "douche bag" but not "role," yet he has a harsh personal criticism for everyone and everything that doesn't support his grand socialist concepts. It's enemies like him that make me glad I'm not on his side!

"The danger I see here is that intrusive judicial oversight and second-guessing of presidential determinations in these critical areas can put at risk the very security of our nation in a time of war," Ashcroft said in a speech to the Federalist Society, a conservative lawyers group.
"Courts are not equipped to execute the law. They are not accountable to the people," Ashcroft said.

Specter Backs Ashcroft for Next Supreme Court Opening
(2004-11-10) -- To prove beyond a reasonable doubt that his stand on abortion won't stand in the way of President George Bush's federal court nominees, future senate judiciary committee chairman Arlen Specter today said he views departing Attorney General John Ashcroft as the kind of jurist he hopes the president will nominate.

"I'd like to see a Chief Justice Ashcroft," said Mr. Specter, R/D-PA, "In fact, I challenge the president to nominate Ashcroft so I can finally prove my loyalty to this administration and to this party, once and for all."

Mr. Ashcroft, who is an evangelical Christian, has been a lightning rod for criticism by civil liberties advocates because his Justice Department ordered millions of secret wiretaps and sent all of the nation's Muslims to a detention center at the U.S. Naval Station at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

A spokesman for the Attorney General said, "Sen. Specter's support of Mr. Ashcroft's appointment to the Supreme Court comes as no surprise to the Justice Department. The senator has been talking about it privately with his wife, Joan, in the kitchen, and by email, instant message and phone with his best friend for months."

if that's true, how many attacks on the US have there been since we went into Afghanistan?

all i see is 9/11. EDIT* (actually, since afghanistan that would be 0 attacks)

But the point is, how many before 9/11 in 60 years? 1 if you count the original WTC bombing.

Claiming Ashcroft did his job because he kept the attacks away is ridiculous. I have a magic rock that keeps terrorism away from Canada, wanna buy it?

You are obviously not getting the point. Someone was saying that Ashcroft did a great job PROTECTING the US, and their argument was that not a single attack has happened since 9/11 and for that reason, this person thinks Ashcroft has done a great job.

My counter was that, there has only been 1 other attack on US soil in 60 years which would mean that its probably not Ashcroft keeping the evil terrorists away.

Get it? Wouldn't be surprised if you didn't.

i get it, but you might be forgetting that i rarely respond to a thread on topic.

my argument is there has been more attacks on the US with clinton than there has been with GW.

we're both right :)

except for the fact we've been attacked numerous times before 9/11.

Of course there is also the fact that after 9/11, thanks to the new laws and the fear mongering here in the US the terrorists haven't had a reason to attack again. Ashcroft did their job for them.

Plus, big attacks take time to plan. But I can guarantee you that ther cells are already in the US.

You guys are misinterpretting the job of Atorney General. It is not to keep america safe, it is to prosecute.

During Clinton's administration, he found and prosecuted the terrorists involved in the world trade center. Bush has not - and John Ashcroft has only received one conviction which was overturned due to mismanagement.

Nazi-Germany wasn't attacked either until they struck out.
