More important than the Presidential vote

Post by Kylere »

I had to make a rotten choice tonight on a proposal. First let me state, that i think marriage is religious choice, not a secular one, I support people who do not or cannot marry getting pwoer of attorneys so they can act as nearest relative in medical situations, wills cover death issues, etc. So I do not see a justification in marriage being other than male/female. I support civil unions as a way of tying power of attorney rights and inheritance issues into one package for gay people.

But I had to vote on this proposal tonight
The proposal would amend the state constitution to provide that "the union of one man and one woman in marriage shall be the only agreement recognized as a marriage or similar union for any purpose."
Now is it just me or is that bullshit? Michigan already has a law defining marriage as a male/female option only, this is bloody well ignorant and far to the right of even what the President has proposed. But this is way out of line, and it perturbs me, because it does not allow for how I feel on the issue either way, it only allows the most single minded of choices.

I voted against, but it is dirty politics that word things this way, and it makes me wonder just how stupid people are now.

there was one on the Georgia ballot as well.

i think it was a very clever manuever to get it on 11 state ballots for Republicans because it really energizes the conservative base there.

there is already a federal law that says the same thing, its all political propaganda.

It was there Akaran, but worded differently.

In WV it was "Marriage shall only be one brother to one sister." :)

The subject of this thread shows just how out of touch with reality you are, Kylere. Either that or how fucked up your priorities are. Get over yourself.

I welcome any anti-gay union legislation for a simple reason. The sooner the conservative assholes pass stupid legislation, the sooner it will end up in front of the Supreme court and the court will tell the conservatives to fuck off and keep their Goddamn opinions to themselves.

Get over yourself Noel, whomever is the President will have little impact, gas prices are going to keep going up, we will stay involved in the middle east, terrorism will be a big issue etc.

But when they word laws this poorly it is a real concern especially as TWELVE states are doing it, and all of them are equally fucked up in terms of wording.

Obviously the people find it important. Besides Oregon, gay marriage has been shot down big time. Aren't we not supposed to respect the will of the majority? Isn't this what many have been saying when they bring up the popular vote bullshit from 2000? Huh? Huh? :)

Midnyte, the majority cannot READ the damn ballot, they go in thinking "ugg this bad' or "ugg this good"

Thus we get bullshit laws.

Gas prices are going to keep going up, we'll stay involved in the middle-East, and terrorism will be a big issue? What the fuck did you do, scan a US history book? None of those things have a goddamn thing to do with who will be President, and what impact a President can have. Get a fucking clue.

I covered your second paragraph in my second paragraph. Again, get over yourself. Your myopic view of the world is pathetic. Believe it or not, there is life outside of Flint, Michigan, where there are other issues besides gas prices, our involvement in the middle-East and terrorism.

Noel you are a dumbass, I have spent a 4th of my life and nearly half my post high school life overseas, since turning 18 I spent 8 years in Europe 8 years in Cincy and 1 year in Flint.

Regardless of who is prez, the basics will stay true, you will see little change, and nothing will get fixed. Deal with it, Kerry is not the second coming of christ and neither is Bush. Until we as a country reject paired losers for leadership nothing will change.

Yes, but Kerry is less likely to start a third entanglement.

I had the same proposal on my ballot!

The only thing I didn't like about it was that I had to read the whole thing like 2 or 3 times to make sure that I was voting the right way.

Unfortunately it looks like it is going to pass. Oh well, hopefully that'll change in the future.

"Looks" like it is going to pass? It was 2 or 3 to 1 in nearly every state. In Missouri it was a 6 to 1 vote. That is an enormous margin. The only thing that I think helped keep the numbers as close as they were is that they also included the civil union wording along with it in most states.

A lot of people that think gay marriage is wrong do think there should be some type of civil union to give some extraneous rights to same sex couples.
