There was a similar feature in some of Sony's high end 8mm camcorders a couple years ago. The cameras would record in low light, but if you masked the light sensor they would switch to infrared mode. The majority of the cameras that this feature worked on were sold in Japan though some US camcorders had this as well.

I understand some of the first "nude" shots of Anna Kournikova that hit the Internet were taken through this method.
