MP3 Players
I'm looking into getting an MP3 player atm. I want a good one, probably at least 10gb space, maybe 20gb. More than 20gb is just more than I'd need! What are some specs I should be looking at that are important? Currently I'm looking at the Creative Zen Touch unit. Anyone know how this one stacks up? I'm pretty leary of an iPod, basically because I'm leary of all things Apple

i highly reccomend the ipod, i have a um, 3rd generation one?(the generation prior to the current one) and im in love with it
the capicity is great, the UI is simple but effective, it can take a beating(ive dropped it plenty of times)
spec wise the only real considerations are capacity, battery life(battery replacability down the line)the ability to play VBR, WMA, or other formats you might dig(the ipod does the apple lossless shit if your into that)
other than that all have the same signal/noise ratios, xfer speeds etc..
im not a mac guy(well i own a powerbook now, in addition to my PC), been PC all my computing life and im really satisfied with the ipod
the way i figure it too, theyve been at the portable mp3 player a fuck of a long time, not to mention the one you pointed out looks like ipod knockoff
that, and id only even consider a non ipod portable mp3 player when another company develops a 'standard' they stick with(this shines through in battery replacability if it comes to that)
also, a friend of mine got a current gen one and its really nice, the redid the interface and its much better
so thats that for what its worth

Well, got my Creative Zen Touch about a week ago, so thought I would report back.
So far, I love it. The sound quality is good (I am using my own headphones I had from before I got it rather than the earbud headphones that come with it). Controls are pretty easy to use, although the strip down the middle that functions as kind of a touch scrollbar can be a little touchy sometime to do small movements with, not so much that it is annoying (and I am getting used to using it). The software to copy mp3s to it is easy to use and the transfer is reasonably fast. Battery life seems good. It just gives you the three black bars for fully charged type indicator a lot of cell phones use. About 4-6 hours of use at work is usually roughly a bubble of use (I have never gotten down to less than 2 bars before recharging so far, I am sure I will at some point). I really like the ability to load this much music up on it. At this point I have about 1700 songs on it which is about half of the capacity (how many will vary of course based on what quality mp3s are recorded at etc.).
I did have it lock up on me once, when I had first loaded some stuff on it. If it does lock up there is a small hole you stick a paperclip/whatever in to reset it. A little kludgy but I can live with it. After that one time I haven't had any problems with it (and I have loaded stuff to it quite a few times since then).
Haven't had another comparable player to this before (had a small capacity one a few years back) so I can't really say how well it stacks up against them, but I have been happy with my purchase so far.
If you have any questions I can try to answer them.

Get a nomad zen micro. I got last years zen xtra, which is slightly smaller than a cassette player and the touch is the same. my friend got the micro a few weeks ago and we switched just to try them both out. i liked the micro a lot better because of how compact and easy to use it was.

Do you guys really have that much music? I have like 2300 songs and it fills up roughly 9.5 gigabytes on my 20GB Ipod, i don't think i'll ever fill it.

I have two players.. a small 512 meg flash player for workouts and a CD player for MP3 CDs. That combination works like a charm for me but it all depends on what you like and prefere. I've used my gf's Dell player a few times and it seems fine as well, although the menues can be tricky at first.
As for how much music.. I have converted our fairly large CD collections to MP3 so I have a lot. Just so much easier to have it all available electronically.
