Post by Knibble »

My son started soccer and I was wondering if there was a site that I can get a video or something to dload to show him how its played so he isn't so lost.He is in second grade and never played before, there are kids on his team who are one and two year veterans of the game.
Thanks for the help!

Might be a good start...not exactly what you're looking for, but it's a beginning.

It's not online, but Google revealed:

Again, from the coach perspective (it's damned hard to find kid references):

Sit down and watch a game with him on television and explain it to him, or take him to a game one of the local teams are playing. If you do the local team route you could probably even convince the coach to let the kid sit with the players and have them explain what iti s that happens.

Yah go to a local game if possible, should be fun. Also, ESPN sometimes show Champion League games from Europe where you get to watch the best in the world play. Some of those can be quite entertaining with skills and technique at the highest level.

Champions League games are the way to watch top players but a local game will be ideal, meeting players in the flesh is the best experience and will help him with the mentality of the game
As he grows older he will adapt to a position also so he will be used to the game, earlier U start the better

The tactics of each position can be learned pretty quickly and I'm sure they'll clue him in. It's a straightforward sport compared to the baroque mysteries that are popular in your weird country.

If he's got a ball he should kick it around himself often to build his ball control skills. If he has any ability this kind of practice will stand him in good stead no matter what role he ends up filling for his team.

And always always always kick the ball with the side of the foot - never the toes ;)

I think you should trade his soccer ball in for a football, give him a raw t-bone steak, and sit him down in front of Fox or CBS this Sunday.

It's available in the US. I would just worry a little about the language. It's not too bad, but it might give the wrong impression.

Errr, I'm not talking about the 'movie'.
Really Bend it Like Beckham is an instructional series aimed at younger viewers. I've watched it with my nieces a few times. Although it may be a little advanced for someone who is completely new to football, it covers basics like turning, defending, crossing, passing and control.

Edit: After looking around, it will be available on DVD Oct 4, but I didn;'t see anything about an american release.

Remember to aim your cleats at your opponents' knees when slide tackling. Going after the ball is for sissies.
