Does anyone have a real solution for this? I basically stopped playing my XBox a year ago because I could not play games for longer than an hour or two without getting the dirty disk error and few things are more frustrating than having to continue from an old saved game due to hardware malfunction.
I got Fable last night and I about threw the XBox out the window. Does anyone have any suggestions? Do new boxes not have this problem?

There are three different brands of DVD drives that were used in XBoxes. Some are notorious for being bad. You could buy another DVD drive, I'm sure they're cheap although I havent looked into this option.Avestan wrote:Does anyone have a real solution for this? NM, just looked.
Here's a site with some suggestions on cleaning the drive:

It has pics of the various drives so you can determine which one you have:

Here's a direct Link to the replacement DVD Drive for XBox for 54.00.

You may find it cheaper if you look around. That's just the first google that popped up.
Well. . .I think I am going to geta new XBox because the DVD drive that I would put into it (a samsung one instead of the Thompson that I have) costs almost as much as a new system. I also found out there there is actually a market for my 1.0 box because it is easier to mod. If I had more time, I would mod it myself, but I do not. So I will most likely end up EBaying the machine.
