Who knows, maybe it's just a temporary statistical blip, but news like this isn't bad to hear sometimes. The chilling sights and sounds of war fill newspapers and television screens worldwide, but war itself is in decline, peace researchers report.
In fact, the number killed in battle has fallen to its lowest point in the post-World War II period, dipping below 20,000 a year by one measure
Peace breaks out.... except on VV...

Geez, maybe things aren't as dire as you think...
So what you’re saying is that the U.N. is actually doing a good job then?In fact, the number killed in battle has fallen to its lowest point in the post-World War II period, dipping below 20,000 a year by one measure. Peacemaking missions, meantime, are growing in number.
Oh wait the article says that itself.
Most new missions, half of which were in Africa, were undertaken by regional organizations or coalitions of states, often with U.N. sanction.
The idea of U.N. primacy in world peace and security took a "bruising" at U.S. hands in 2003, when Washington circumvented the U.N. Security Council to invade Iraq, Dwan noted. But meanwhile, elsewhere, the world body was deploying a monthly average of 38,500 military peacekeepers in 2003 — triple the level of 1999.
By year's end, the institute yearbook will conclude, "the U.N. was arguably in a stronger position than at any time in recent years."

Re: Peace breaks out.... except on VV...
It would be good news, but seeing as the estimates are in the neighborhood of 11k civilian deaths in the past 18 months in Iraq, 50k in the past 20 months in Sudan, 2k in Haiti, 1800 in Algeria already this year, and over 3 million in 5 years of fighting in the congo I think you can say those numbers are way the fuck off. Just because someone isn't holding a gun pointing it at someone before someone shoots them/cuts them with a machete/bombs them, doesn't mean they didn't die in warMetanis wrote:The chilling sights and sounds of war fill newspapers and television screens worldwide, but war itself is in decline, peace researchers report.

I agree Pherr but it would still appear the trend is "good".Pherr the Dorf wrote:Just because someone isn't holding a gun pointing it at someone before someone shoots them/cuts them with a machete/bombs them, doesn't mean they didn't die in war
