Er, do you even understand what the purpose of a site like Google or Yahoo news is? Neither of them have their own reporters on staff, they are sites that collect news pieces from various news wires and newspapers and other places.
Go look at the page that you linked, there is at least one link - the only link on the whole page that I clicked on - that links to an op/ed piece praising Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) plan for reforming the intelligence committee.
I suppose you're suggesting Google News becomes a bit more "fair and balanced" by removing their elite strategy of linking to left-wing viewpoints altogether?

1.) The site's main page is called "Google News"... not "Google Opinion"... not "Google Politics"... not "Google Op-Ed". The layout of the page suggests news headlines. Here's another example of media stupidity...
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=s ... nm/iraq_dc
The headline is "Iraq Forces Advance on Najaf Shrine, Battle Rages"
But then read the entire article. Where is the raging battle? Is it the 50 Iraqis and the SINGLE American soldier?
Later there is reference to "with fighting raging". But then we read that section is about tanks moving around and there was some bombing by US warplanes.
So 51 troops getting shot at and some action by an AC-130 becomes breathless reporting that the battle is raging?
What a crock of hyperbole.

What a crock of hyperbole.
The advance was carried out by 50 Iraqi servicemen and came after U.S. helicopters fired missiles and strafed militants dug in at a cemetery near the mosque, where most of the fighters have holed up during the three-week uprising in the city.
A U.S. soldier guided the men in. They were shot at by Mehdi militiamen and returned fire.
"We are in the last hours. This evening, Iraqi forces will reach the doors of the shrine and control it and appeal to the Mehdi Army to throw down their weapons," Defense Minister Hazim al-Shalaan said at a U.S. army base outside Najaf.
"If they do not, we will wipe them out."
With fighting raging, U.S. tanks reinforced positions along the southern flank of the mosque. Black smoke rose from the area and automatic gunfire crackled after an overnight bombardment from U.S. warplanes and artillery.

Hahahaha that reminds me when the war first started. I was listening to NPR and this guy was breathlessly talking about how the US was taking "heavy casualties" some place. Eventually he was asked how many that it was and he said "I believe it's in the double digits now." Nice heavy casualties.

No, for most reputable news outlets the Op/Ed pieces are not listed as news, they are clearly differentiated and listed as opinion or commentary.Sylvus wrote:99.9% of every newspaper and television news program runs Op/Ed pieces and are still referred to as news.

Well it could be because it's in BETA, hence why it says News BETA down there.Metanis wrote:No, for most reputable news outlets the Op/Ed pieces are not listed as news, they are clearly differentiated and listed as opinion or commentary.Sylvus wrote:99.9% of every newspaper and television news program runs Op/Ed pieces and are still referred to as news.

Also with your proclamaition that Google News is slanted is amusing, since you have just accused a computer algorithm of having a left-wing viewpoint! Fuck your computer is liberal, burn it now! (that would be a blessing)
Because you're obviously too stupid to read the word BETA right on their main page, I thought I'd cut and paste for you their approach to news. If you notice a problem with their product, try reporting it instead of just whining up a shitstorm.

A Novel Approach to News
Google News presents information culled from approximately 4,500 news sources worldwide and automatically arranged to present the most relevant news first. Topics are updated continuously throughout the day, so you will see new stories each time you check the page. Google has developed an automated grouping process for Google News that pulls together related headlines and photos from thousands of sources worldwide -- enabling you to see how different news organizations are reporting the same story. You pick the item that interests you, then go directly to the site which published the account you wish to read.
Google News is highly unusual in that it offers a news service compiled solely by computer algorithms without human intervention. While the sources of the news vary in perspective and editorial approach, their selection for inclusion is done without regard to political viewpoint or ideology. While this may lead to some occasionally unusual and contradictory groupings, it is exactly this variety that makes Google News a valuable source of information on the important issues of the day.
You can trace the history of a developing issue by clicking the "sort by date" function on the page containing all reports on a given topic. This will arrange the stories in chronological order, with the most recent report placed first.
As we continue to improve Google News, we'll be adding more news sources and fine-tuning our algorithms. Your opinions and feedback can help us with this process. What news sources would you like to see added? What advanced search features would be helpful?

andWho edits the Google News homepage? One of the headlines is totally out of whack.
The headlines that appear on Google news are selected entirely by computer algorithms, based on how and where the stories appear elsewhere on the web. There are no human editors at Google selecting or grouping the headlines and no individual decides which stories get top placement. This occasionally results in some articles appearing to be out of context.
Those leftist fuckers are even taking feedback!!!!I just did a search, and I wasn't happy with the results. Who should feel my wrath?

And the Opinion and Commentary sections are clearly delineated and they are not presented on the main page as news headlines.
Arguing the selections are computer generated doesn't carry water since the source pages on the NYT are marked quite well as Editorial.
If you folks don't see the issue I've got some ocean-front property for sale in New Mexico.

I don't see the issue, nor do I want your New Mexico property. Google automatically scrapes the links and groups them by topic and presents them all on one page. When you read the article, you can see that they are marked quite well as editorial. If it bothers you that badly, don't go to google news anymore. I'd never been there before you posted the link to it, and I'm getting along just fine. The bottom line is that Google never claimed they were fair and balanced. In fact, the only place that does claim that they are fair and balanced is decidedly not.
