Just noticed this on my new computer. Something called the Java (TM) 2 platform keeps poping up in my taskbar. I can't right click it, double click it, or click it at all. I've never noticed this on my old computer (also a Dell with Windows XP Home, like this one) - and I'm interested to know what this is, exactly.
Is it safe to assume this is part of the windows vs sun dispute over how MS was handling java in their systems, or something different?

I know I'm good at what I do, but I know I'm not the best.
But I guess that on the other hand, I could be like the rest.

You are correct sir. Because of the dispute with Sun, Microsoft was no longer allowed to include their version of Java anymore. As such you have had the Sun version installed on your PC.
Personally I hate that stupid coffee cup in the task bar, and if I remember correctly you can indeed disable it from showing up there.
