Man says he didn't mean to board plane with gun, knife

The Associated Press
Last Updated 11:40 am PDT Tuesday, August 3, 2004
SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - A man pleaded not guilty Monday to knowingly attempting to board a plane with a loaded handgun, folding knife, and 10 syringes in his carry-on bag.
Ali Reza Khatami, 65, was arrested June 24 when the .38-caliber pistol and 3.5-inch knife were found during a security screening, Assistant U.S. Attorney Greg Staples said. He had been preparing to board a United Airlines flight to Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C.

Defense attorney Ben Wasserman said at Khatami's bail hearing last month that his client had forgotten he was carrying the weapons. He said his client was on his way to Virginia to sell some property.

Khatami told authorities he had planned to put the gun and knife in his bag to take them to a safe in his garage, but didn't remember. Then he planned to leave them at his son's house, he said, but he was in such a rush that he forgot again.

Staples said Khatami was a danger because he had given inconsistent statements to investigators. Staples said the gun had been packed into an oven mitt, which he described as "essentially a low-tech silencer."

Magistrate Judge Marc Goldman agreed to release Khatami on $100,000 bail, saying he was not convinced that Khatami intended to take the weapons on the plane.

The case is set for trial before U.S. District Judge James Selna on Sept. 7.

what is your point? white people "forget" their handguns on their carryon bags too.

being a muslim he should have known better though. I mean the chances of him not being searched are almost nil.

if he forgot he had a loaded gun in his bag doesnt it stand to reason he also forgot his knife?

and what would you use syringes for if you were trying to hijack a plane?

fuck i get racially profiled all the time. I remember once on a connecting flight in atlanta, we were boarding the plane, this was about a year after 911. They were pulling people out "randomly" to do random checks. In line there were 4-5 black dudes standing togeather, in there early-mid twentys. They skipped everyone else except for them
Another time on a flight, I was going threw security, and this old couple standing in front of me in line started to stare at me with a very apprehensive look. The old fucker, with a deep southern accent told me" hey, you look pretty suspicious, where are you going today?" All i could do is start laughing at the guy, it took my two "white" friends i was traveling with to shut him up

I think it was more like bad timing to have this kind of memory loss. It is a sad thing but still true that it is not a good time to be from the middle east and in America these days.

EDIT Same as it isn't a good time to be an American and be anywhere besides the United States these days.

The guy was an idiot, but I fail to see what this has to do with racial profiling. If you look back in this forum alone, you can find incidents posted here where some idiot brought a weapon on board a plane. This is the first time posted here the idiot was Arab.

It should be really obvious the guy just forgot about the weapons. Only a moron of colosal stature could have been thinking he would be able to board the plane with it. Even before our "hightened security" measures were in effect.

i'm also not sure what this has to do with racial profiling.

EVERY carry on bag is scanned/searched. He had this shit laying in his carry on. Of course he was caught

I took a trip up north recently and had to take off my shoes, turn on every electronic device I carried with me, and had to show ID at 2 different locations as well as boarding pass.

This guy wasn't singled out for anything, he was going through what should be standard security these days.

As for him trying to get on the plane with this stuff, forgetting isn't an excuse. They should throw the book at him just as they would anyone else. Doesn't matter what his intent was. This is just like trying the "I didn't know it was illegal" defense. Not knowing the law doesn't excuse you from recieving punishment nor should this.

Don't people walk around with loaded concealed weapons in the US? I honestly don't know, do weapons have to be unloaded?

I've got two guns in my home and both are loaded. Of course, I don't have children. If I did, it would be another matter entirely. But I keep them loaded because if someone breaks in, I don't want to be waking up out of a deep sleep and fumbling around for a clip or bullets while they're obviously hearing me do so. If I actually have to use one, it's going to be an emergancy and it's going to be to defend my life. In such a case, I'm going to pick it up, know it's loaded, and point it at the stupid fuck that decided to break into my place.

thank you. you kinda proved my point. you keep it loaded because you intend to use it. you might not be going to 7-11 and using it, but you intend to use it. that's why it's loaded.

however, it takes about 1 second to pop a magazine into the weapon and pull and release the charging handle and take it off safe. unless it's not magazine fed.

You apparently are quite the retard. No one in their right mind is going to leave a magazine out if they have a weapon they intend to use for defense. Try locating your gun and the magazine in the dark...then put the magazine in and jack the slide back. I bet you can't locate it and get the magazine into the gun within 10 seconds.....much less do it while waking up to the crash of glass and being scared witless.

Forthe....most states in the U.S. have some type of concealed carry law. You can't just legally grab a weapon and carry it like that without going through some type of course and getting a license. If you have any type of felony you can't even think about it. I don't know of anyone that would carry one around unloaded......but then again if you have a gun, why the hell do you need to be carrying a knife?

You must live in a very sheltered world. People are killing families for nothing more than $100 every single day. Look at the 5 murders over an X-box for christ's sake.

You sit in your little world and wait until someone shatters it. I will sit in mine with my firearms and take someone else out before I allow them to destroy mine.

I am not 100% on all of the details. But in Minnesota, if you have your gun in your car with you - the bullets and gun have to be separated by a considerable space.. Like gun in the glove box and bullets in the trunk. But I am sure it varies greatly from state to state.

I think here in Florida, they have a "2 Step" law in regards to guns inside vehicles. As in there need to be 2 steps between you deciding to get the gun and actually being able to fire it.

For example, my friend used to carry his pistol in a locked holster locked inside his glove box. Basically intended to keep you from catching a mind snap in traffic and popping off caps on the freeway.

Sheltered? Maybe, after all I grew up in a country were peopel aren't gunhappy like they are here. But the amusing thing is while I lived in San Antonio I went to class with a police negotiator, and he told me that when you have a gun yourself it increases the chance of you getting hurt by a LOT. Either because the criminal will use a weapon as well (which is less likely if you are unarmed) or the weapon can be turned against yourself.

People that believe that are complete tools.

Yeah, I'm going to be hurt more if someone breaks into my house with a gun and I have one too, because after all, they weren't intending on using their gun.. I hope.. And if I owned a bar or a store I'd be damn sure to have protection there as well. People are killing people for no reason. Me having a way to defend myself isn't going to make me more susceptable to being injured.. unless my name is George Bush and I can't even fucking eat pretzels without nearly killing myself.

I disagree with you. A guy comes up to you with a gun and asks for your money, you pull out a gun. Chances are he will shoot you because now the mugar (sp) is defending himself (as ridiculous as that sounds). He most likely wouldn't of shot back if you didn't pull out another weapon.

I do believe that having a weapon increases the odds of you getting hurt.

I have a gun-toter who's a friend. He knows full well that the chances of his gun ever actually protecting him from anything is slim to nil, but the illusion of safety is really all he's going for. Frankly, if you keep a gun close enough to you that you'd be able to use it in a dangerous situation, you increase the risk of accidents to considerably more than the risk you'll ever encounter a situation where you need to use it.

But I don't blame anyone for taking comfort in that sort of thing.

Yeah I always enter an airport with a loaded weapon and a knife in a carry on that will be going through an X-ray machine. I always make sure that the gun is fully loaded and ready to go too. That way when they see the fire arm and knife in my bag which I was not sending to the Luggage cart but putting under my chair or in the compartment above my head, that I can be completley sodomized by airport security for being a completely stupid fuck. No...I've lived in a bubble for the last few years and have no concept of how the 9/11 affected not only severe paranoia on airplanes but also the drastically increased security at every stop in an airport. This guy being stopped had nothing to do with Racial profiling, it had everything to do with being a completley stupid asshole. I hope they send this guy to Federal Bang me in the Ass prison for being too stupid to be allowed in society.

And I'd disagree with you.. because first off, I'm not going to pull out a gun while one is pointed directly at me. I'm not going to be foolish enough to make any sudden movements unless it's one that I think has a chance at disarming the gun from the criminal - and is necessary because I believe if I don't I'm going to die. And second, if I pull out a gun it's going to be because the first thing I'm going to do in less than a half second is pull the trigger. I'm not pulling a gun as a warning. I'm pulling a gun in what I believe is a life or death situation and I'm not hesitating on pulling the trigger if it means saving my life, or the lives of loved ones. It's why I've taken gun safety courses, and it's why I practice at a shooting range.

As for keeping my firearms loaded in my home, if I hear someone breaking a window in the living room or making noise in the living room, me in my bedroom is going to be pulling out my gun. Not fumbling for the clip and making noise loading one into the chamber. If a criminal walks through my bedroom door he's going back out of it off of his feet.

Anyone foolish enough to start screaming 'freeze i have a gun' is simply begging to be shot. You don't face off a criminal with a gun; especially in your home. You shoot them as quickly as you possibly can. Religious freaks can spend the rest of their lives crying to God about why he allowed nasty things to happen. I'd prefer to be the one thanking him that I was able to do something to prevent it.

This is a very reasonable and rational approach. I keep several loaded guns around the house. (I have no children living at home). I live in a part of the country where you should assume everyone has a loaded gun at home. We have almost no instances of home invasions.

That reminds me of the Simpsons.

Lisa:" You see this rock?"
Homer: "Ya"
Lisa: "Do you see any tigers around?"
Homer: "No"
Lisa: "So I guess this rock keeps tigers away"
Homer: "Lisa, I want to buy your rock"

Kilmoll the Sexy wrote:Maybe you should have a little fear. With the way people are becoming, having no fears is not the smartest thing to do. You are not immune because you are in Canada....there is no restriction for these thugs to not be able to work their way north.
Where the fuck did I say I was immune to anything?

The fact of the matter is that Canadians rarely kill other Canadians.

I have a far greater chance of being hit and killed by a car while crossing the street. Does that mean I should fear crossing the road?

Canada has one of the lowest muder rates per capita in the world... roughly 550 in a country of nearly 32 million. Even the crime filled streets of Toronto have seen a decrease in violent crime in the past 2 years.

Here is an example why I don't fear for my safety:

Incidents of violent crime:
Toronto - 70 per 1 million
Chicago - 16000 per 1 million

Murders
Chicago - 698
Toronto - 65
Canada - 554

In 1999, Toronto had remarkably low 47 murders.
That's in a city of nearly 5 million people.

I'll never understand people who suggest I should be more fearful because there is a risk of something happening. They say it as if it's some kind of revelation. "What? I might get shot? No way!"

I choose not to fear it. I'm not telling you not to, but don't tell me I should. I have other things to do with my time.

I'm pretty sure Metanis will welcome the "loaded gun" you'll bring Cartalas.
