We have an old Sega GameGear and a N64 and are looking to get a system with new games coming out. I was hoping some of you could give me recommendations on the various console systems.
Our 14 year old daughter will be the main one playing but we also want a system that has quality games for our 4 year old son. Our daughter is not the typical teenage girl (thank heavens). She is more a tomboy and likes games like EQ (her cleric just hit 60 last week).
I appreciate any help.

Are you talking about a new console like a PS2 or XBox?Fredonia Coldheart wrote:We have an old Sega GameGear and a N64 and are looking to get a system with new games coming out. I was hoping some of you could give me recommendations on the various console systems.

Here are the positives and negatives for those systems:
XBox
+ Newest system with the best graphics
+ has High Def games that play in 1080i and 480P
+ has overtaken PS2 in new console sales
PS2
+ Has the most games
+ Controller is smaller and better laid out (with kids in mind)
- isn't capable of High Definition
Both XBox and PS2 are 149.00 now.
In general, X-Box is more of an adult console than the PS2. With a 4 year old son, you'd probably find many more PS2 games that he could play than XBox games.
If you have a High Definition TV, you may want to get XBox anyway because it looks so good. PS2 is a step below Xbox in the graphics department but other than that will work fine.
I'm not sure this is what you were looking for but maybe it will help.

I really have to agree with Winnow on this point.Winnow wrote: In general, X-Box is more of an adult console than the PS2. With a 4 year old son, you'd probably find many more PS2 games that he could play than XBox games.

I recently got an Xbox and have no trouble finding games for myself and my 7 year old son. However, I really struggle to find games for my 5 year all daughter.

Aye - we are looking into getting a PS2, XBox, or a Game Cube and this is what I wanted to know. He really likes playing games and I want to make sure the console we get has ones that he will have no problem playing so it looks like a PS2 will be the choice.
The way he is going though, we'll probably have to get him his own EQ account in a couple of years. He loves running the characters in explore mode (or newbie zones) and runs the hotkeys for me when we are playing. It is great having an instant group when the family logs in.

Well GameCube has a ton of games for the younger crowd. Plus it's half off what an X-Box or PS2 would run ya. If your kids enjoy your N64 a lot, then I'd suggest getting the GameCube. But if they are looking for something new, I'd go with X-Box. I bought a PS2 but as the years progress, X-Box seems like the better system. Lots of games are taking advantage of the hardware superiority that the X-Box has over the PS2. Plus you can easily haxxor your X-Box. Couple that with an unlimited video game rental at your local store, then you can have a seemingly limitless amount of games.
I own a PS2, Cube and a PC and the GameCube gets the most playtime in our household. Plus it's cheap and most of the big-name releases come out on it. The only potential problem is if you have kids who want what everyone else has in which case get a PS2. XBox sucks unless you want to hack it into a piracy box.
Gamecube isn't half of a PS2 or XBox. It's 99.00 vs 149.00 though. (that was for Aevian Dreaklear)vn_Tanc wrote:I own a PS2, Cube and a PC and the GameCube gets the most playtime in our household. Gamecube is also an option for young kids but since you may play it and your daughter is getting older and her friends most likely will have PS2s, I think the PS2 would be a better overall choice.
Since games are the most important, you may want to check out some games here: (click on the console icon at top of page)

With just your son in mind, Gamecube probably wins for games.
