If you can't win, cancel!
What do you do when your approval rating is in the shitter and your trailing in the polls and are afraid you won't be re-elected? You come up with a way to simply cancel the election as a whole! Fear is a wonderful thing..

July 19 issue - American counterterrorism officials, citing what they call "alarming" intelligence about a possible Qaeda strike inside the United States this fall, are reviewing a proposal that could allow for the postponement of the November presidential election in the event of such an attack, NEWSWEEK has learned.
The prospect that Al Qaeda might seek to disrupt the U.S. election was a major factor behind last week's terror warning by Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge. Ridge and other counterterrorism officials concede they have no intel about any specific plots. But the success of March's Madrid railway bombings in influencing the Spanish elections—as well as intercepted "chatter" among Qaeda operatives—has led analysts to conclude "they want to interfere with the elections," says one official.
As a result, sources tell NEWSWEEK, Ridge's department last week asked the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel to analyze what legal steps would be needed to permit the postponement of the election were an attack to take place. Justice was specifically asked to review a recent letter to Ridge from DeForest B. Soaries Jr., chairman of the newly created U.S. Election Assistance Commission. Soaries noted that, while a primary election in New York on September 11, 2001, was quickly suspended by that state's Board of Elections after the attacks that morning, "the federal government has no agency that has the statutory authority to cancel and reschedule a federal election." Soaries, a Bush appointee who two years ago was an unsuccessful GOP candidate for Congress, wants Ridge to seek emergency legislation from Congress empowering his agency to make such a call. Homeland officials say that as drastic as such proposals sound, they are taking them seriously—along with other possible contingency plans in the event of an election-eve or Election Day attack. "We are reviewing the issue to determine what steps need to be taken to secure the election," says Brian Roehrkasse, a Homeland spokesman.

Considering ample time is required to announce the election yadda yadda, postponing it will achieve what exactly? If there was / is a 'terrorist plot' to interrupt the elections in some way shape or form, I'm sure they would not have much of an issue of postponing their plans.

Sounds like the way they are using terror threats and the threat meter (elevated atm isn't it?) to put a scare in the population. Just like how they use the "We have avoided hundreds of terror attempts" crap to build support.
Really pathetic imho.
Edit: Besides, wouldn't that be letting the terrorists win?

Terrorism has a much better chance to prosper under a lax government, ie Kerry/Edwards or before them Clinton/Gore. Tell me you really don't believe they would prefer having a man like Bush as president where he actually challenges them? Damn some of you people really suck up the rhetoric and don't do any thinking for yourselves at all.Kelshara wrote:Well they want Bush to win the election heh.. and of course having the election cancelled or postponed gives them a victory.
Well let's see what Bush has done so far:
- Taken away personal freedoms (wine one for terrorists)
- Taken out one of their enemies (win two for terrorists)
- Caused a major uprise in recruitment (win three for terrorists)
- Played on fear (threat baromether and warnings) which causes fear in the population.. and you are a perfect example (win four for the terrorists)
- Caused a LOT of media attention for ther cause (win five for the terrorists)
I am sure I can give you more as well but well.. to finish off in typical you style: "Damn some of you people really suck up everything the government says and dont' do any thinking of yourself at all".

WWII was not so long ago... It would be really easy to swap Bush's name for someone elses, and be dead on.

Oh, my God; I care so little, I almost passed out.
I'll hail Bush, first emperor of the United States. The power to postpone elections makes my nervis huge. It has big time potential to be abused. Lets see...November election postponed...next available voting date: Nov 2008.
If something like this is done, there needs to be very specific wording so the election isn't delayed more than 30 days.
I'd hate to see this abused in the future by a democrat president!

Wait wait wait! You say Clinton/gore would have done nothing and kerry/edwards would do nothing cause they are "lax"???
You mean, like when Dubya did nothing when he received reports saying Osama WAS going to attack the US?? (see Dr. Condoleezza Rice) Just like that, right? The same "NOTHING" your god didn't do while in office.
Any president would have gone to afganistan afterwards...knee jerk reaction that all politicians did after 9/11.

I reiterate, I am no more safe under Bush than the others whom you claim to be lackadaisical.Midnyte_Ragebringer wrote:Tell me you really don't believe they would prefer having a man like Bush as president where he actually challenges them?
There are a hundred different ways to do that from what Bush is doing and all of them would be better. So again, the irony of you telling me to wake up exceeds even your own record of continuous stupidity on the issue. All you can do is try to prevent as much as humanly possible.
Who's to say Al Qaeda would actually attack. I wouldn't put it past Bush or one of his cronies to fake an attack and make it look like AQ was responsible. Delaying the election is just one step closer to dictatorship or dissolution of Congress.
The reason why there haven't been more terror attacks in my opinion is because having a lot of random attacks lessens the impact of those attacks on our psyche. Look at Israel, they have a bombing every day and it doesn't do squat for them over there. A smart organization will have one big attack every few years to keep us from getting complacent.

As a matter of fact, an AQ official publicly stated he would rather see Bush win the election then anyone else. This is due to the fact that Bush fuels foreghn hate for America (undisputeable) and foreghn hate for america is a great recruiting tool for AQ (undisputeable)Midnyte_Ragebringer wrote:Terrorism has a much better chance to prosper under a lax government, ie Kerry/Edwards or before them Clinton/Gore. I agree, clearly this is a plot to extend Bush's power indefinitely (read: dictatorship). It comes to my mind that this is almost *exactly* how Hitler came to power. The planning for the AQ strike on the towers was going on during the entire Clinton administration...including the training in flight schools for their pilot operatives.
So I guess Osama was clair-fucking-voyant enough to know GW Bush was winning the election years after he started planning.
I sure as fuck hope they find him alive so I can get some winning lottery numbers from him.

Great, so we got one guy here that defends the actions of the most corrupt admin since The Gipper himself via little interjects that are, neither, funny, nor relevant to the discussion in any way shape or form (nor have they ever been for that matter). And we got the other guy here who tries to justify the actions of everything which is "un-american" yet is unable to comprehend what is truly great about this country because Bumblefuck, PA is the capital of the world in his eyes. Regardless, he tries to function a computer to dispute others he knows are far more learned and brighter than himself yet, somehow, has the cohones to think that it's the brighter folks whom are in the dark.Winnow wrote:Move to where? I stll dont agree with this "huge amount of planning" hogwash that supposedly went into attacking the twin towers. All you need is a group of dedicated terrorists who would love nothing more than to martyr his/herself by killing thousands of Americans (yeah, thats difficult) Get them into the states to train at a flight school (the most difficult part....but back then immigration was not nearly as tightly controlled as it is now, and even now its a cluster-fuck). After that, just get a fucking flight schedule, and sit down, pick the flights & teams, then do it. The fact that they actually pulled it off after take off has to do with being dedicated, keeping their heads, and blind luck.

As for the conspiracy babble, I play along with all of the freaks that think Bush has Bin Ladin already, is planning to plow up someting on US soil in order to cause panic and win the election, has orgies with Saudi men, is going to delay the elections on purpose, and so on, and so on. It's either laugh or cry and I smile too much to cry.
