So, even though I know Im going to sound like a complete IntRanet dumbass.... what exactly are Newsgroups?... how do I find them? and what are they good for?
Winnow I was going to PM this question to you, but I figured I could come off as more of an idiot and get flamed a bit if I posted it in a public forum
Day to day net users go about their P2P daily lives while the insiders reap gigs and gigs of data from the usenet. It's your choice! You can take the red pill and go back to your P2P imaginary world or take the blue pill and your life will never be the same!
What servers would you recomend?... My ISP gives me 1gb per month free through giganews... but I think they try to limit me to Outlook Express only....
Ive been reading these damn guides all day... wow theres OMGIAMRETARDEDCAUSEALOTISTWOWORDS of information out there.

If it's a newserver I don't think they can limit you to any one reader. You'll still need the basic info regardless of whatever newsreader you choose: Server name/address, user ID, and password (if required).
My advice is to try a reader other than OE and see how it works. Oh, and don't top post. Thanks!
Start with what your ISP gives you. If you find that's not enough (mainly due to them not carrying the groups you want, ie binaries) look at a third-party news source. I've dealt with Supernews for awhile and they're not bad other than the 10gb a month limit. Agent (the newsreader people) also have a news service that's unlimited for $15 a month.

1 gb/month isn't going to cut it. I've done 24gb in three days.
CoX Cable is the best provider for newgroups IMO. From what I've seen and heard, COX offers the most groups, with 3 servers available and 4 connections allowed per server. If you want alt.binaries.birdshit.eggsucking.pingpongballtrick added to thier list of servers, they'll add it within a week. They monitor the CoX newsgroup message board and keep everyone informed on maintenance etc.
It sounds like you're not so furtunate as your ISP provider has newgroup download limitations so you'll probably have to go the pay route and subscribe to one of the newsgroup providers that Aslanna suggested.
Tip: try something like an MP3 newsgroup to test out your downloading abilities before going for something larger like a full movie.
I started off with supernews and switched to giganews on a cost/dl limit basis but it looks like these days that battle goes back and forth.
I think I pay 12 bucks a month for 10 gig download. The nice thing about giganews is if i reach my limit, they automatically refresh and charge me another 12 bucks. So if there are a lot of movies and such that I want I don't have to go through any hassles, I just keep downloading.
And for readers, I use Newsbin Pro. I've used Agent, newsleecher, bnr2 and others but settled on newsbin pro.
I'm not the download pro's that Aslanna and Winnow are but I try.
P.S. Winnow, cough up the "Women of Home Depot" pics, plz.
I like usenetmonster.com. I went with the 15G/mth for $13.50. My favorite feature is that my unused gigs will roll over to the next month, and there is no limit to the rollover. 10 concurrent connections allowed. You can get free additions to your account by referring people. (Mine is UM46072 if anyone is interested.)

Too often it seems it is the peaceful and innocent who are slaughtered. In this a lesson may be found that it may not be prudential to be either too peaceful or too innocent. One does not survive with wolves by becoming a sheep.
