Holy cow what a fun game.

Post by Adex_Xeda »

A friend of mine suggested that I buy Gothic II.

I never heard of it before but it's a hell of a game with NO BUGS.

I've played for 16 hours and it hasn't crashed or bugged out once.

Imagine an Ultima 9 type interface tuned up and enhanced.

It has a fighting interface where you really have to think about your sword moves. The more skills you get the easier it is for you to go Zorro on someone's ass.

It's a perfect combo between RP stats and FPS with a broadsword.

It's got great sound and better than anything I LOVE to go hunting. You can really stalk things, and use your head to out trick stronger creatures to their death. For instance I tricked a horde of goblins into running off a cliff to their death. I climbed up into a nook on the side of a mountain and rained crossbow bolts down on a huge troll much more powerful than me.

You can specialize in alchemy, collecting parts of hunted animals for cash smithing etc.

The best weapons in the game are the ones you actually forge!

The world flow doesn't have zones. It kinda loads as you go.

In one mission you go sneak ninja style past a beseighing army of orcs and slip into a castle to help out the defenders.

It's not all hack and slash and it's not all stats and figures. It's a perfect blend. It has a great storyline that so far has been very immersive.

It's as broad as Morrowind but not as bland and cookie cuttered.

That fits it well, take a polished Morrowind, make it 10 times more fun and slap it into a polished Ultima 9 type interface, with just a dash of virtua fighter.

Hell of a game for $25.

BTW any of you guys played it or the first Gothic title?

I can't comment on Gothic 2, but I played through Gothic 1 and had a good time. :)

The classes more closely fit the storyline than traditional RP.

There are three paths you can take. Paladin, Merc, and Fire Mage.

The mage is kinda a cross between a EQ cleric and a wizard.

The Paladin is fighter who works for the king and can cast a few prayers.

The Merc is a fighter hired by a rich landowner in the game who is pure melee. He outperforms the Paladin in melee skills.

I found myself choosing a class not because of the the ablities of the class but rather my agreeing with the politics of that particular faction. Go figure. Good storyline.

I forgot to mention that this game is rather adult oriented.

For example there's a whole tradeskill devoted to spiking tobacco with various shrooms and such to get the perfect buzz. With which you can sell to a tobacco vendor for a strong profit. You can smoke the stuff yourself and the screen goes nuts.

Another example of it's adult theme is when you visit a brothel, it acutally shows a cutscene of you and the girl getting it on.

There's also cuss words throughout the dialog.

Be sure to play it through until you at least join a guild.

The starting sequence is a little bland because you don't have any skills.

The fighting is tough at the beginning because you haven't trained enough for you to be fluid with your weapon usage.

You get sucked into the storyline bigtime after that.

It's a little wierd at first but after a little while it fits like a glove.

BTW go to the cheat sites and learn how to modify the .ini file to allow you to quick save and quick load. The designers .ini disabled it because they thought it took away from the realism.

You can also turn up the gore level in the ini file. This is good because if you want to track something that you're hunting they'll leave a blood trail.

You can also configure the ini file to allow a hotkey to your best healing potion and your best mana potion. Again they by default disabled those features because they felt it took away from the realism.

The mouse is used for positioning, while the keys are used to trigger different sword/bow/dodge combos. They couldn't do all of that on the mouse.

You have to find someone to train you.

Some people will train in skills and others in stats, but all of them take a given ammount of learning points. Also some trainers will require money.

The thought they put into the NPC interaction is amazing.

I dueled an NPC for 100gp and won.
While he was on the ground I looted him and took my 100gp. I figured that was the right thing to do.
About 10 seconds later he stands back up so I talk to him and he says "Well I see you already took your money. You could have waited for me to wake up, I gave you my word that I would pay you."

That was pretty cool.

They'll let you in if you let people off in the city after catching them doing something illegal.

Ok, I just happened to be in a GameSpot during lunch. I saw the game for $9.99 so I thought what the hell. I bought it and will install it tonight. I'd install it on my work machine but it seems they want me to work at work. I need my paycheck so I can afford to say what the hell and buy games.

Ok so I get home and I want to install the game and the first disk doesn't work. It hangs on the autorun when I click on the install. I thought fine, I'll make an image and see if I can install from that. No go. So I am going to take it back and see if I can exchange it.

I finished it today. I never played it before, and I took a casual pace. My playtime was right near 50 hours.

Satisfying game. They're writing the 3rd gothic title right now. Meanwhile I'm very tempted to purchase the first Gothic title.

Oh yea they also have some kind of expansion for Gothic II in the pipe.

What faction did everyone here play under?
Im playing a merc and its an overall fun class faction,
although i heard that they dont have as many quests or things to do in chap one so i started chap 2 at a low level
Was thinking about replaying the game later under a fire mage

Any advice/perceptions of best strength/ gameplay value as any of the other factions?

I don't know what to say abotu the class. I have a weapon, and I have scrolls. I don't get paladin Runes till chapter 3 or so, I hear.

Hate the combat system tho.

The sheepherder at the landowner's farm will sell you a sheep.

I played a pure warrior of course.

I kept the gothic 1 controls. I really enjoyed the swordplay that the interface provided.

If you get your training in 1h up enough you can swing that sword so fast that the badguys walk into a blender.

The 2h was fun because many monsters become one shot on kill. The 2h also has very nice range and the most powerful damage ratings.

I also found that with a high enough ranged weapon rating you can more or less use them effectively in a melee situtation. Kinda like sword fighting with a shotgun.

It is a cave built into the wall. If you are facing the landowner follow the wall to the left and you will get to it.

Spoilers on the troll inc.

The Troll is in the upper right section of the map. There's a big lake up there, and a monster illustrated on the upper left of it. That's him. When he dies, you also get his Hide - take it to a mexican sounding bloke at Onar's Farm for 500gp and 3 potions.

The best way to kill the black troll is to run around back and shash him, as he turns slowly keep behind him and you can take him out at almost any lvl with that tactic, you also get a nice 1k exp that helps a lot if your a lower lvl
