SLI with cards that take up 2 slots and drain more power than the rest of the system combined? I see thermal death in your future...

That's why people should buy ATI! at least for now. Two slots for video is dumb. Although I remember using a 286 that had a CGA card that took up two full slots. It was huge!masteen wrote:http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphi ... index.html

Ah, just read the article. basically just two normal cards bridged together. I was expecting more!

Why is that funny? Makes perfect sense to me. When I say I was expecting more, based on this thread, I meant a new line of NVidia cards. Not simply two of their existing cards bridged together.Kelshara wrote:FunnyFirst you say "Buy ATi!" then you say "I expected more!"

Although I am wary of the road nVidia travels down, as 3dfx did the same and eventually folded, I was a big fan of SLI and had 2 V2's back in the day because of the performance it offered. I'd be quite interested to see the real world numbers from this setup.Aslanna wrote:That's why people should buy ATI! at least for now. Two slots for video is dumb. Now the moaning about the 2 slots being used is pathetic. What else would you be using the pcix slot for other than video? HD controllers already have enough bandwidth offered to them with conventional PCI speeds. You don't need it for sound cards or a modem. Video capture has enough bandwidth with PCI as well. So really you're just making use of the 2 slots you have. (and I'm speaking of that pcix model only, not their current crop of cards that fill 2 slots because of sheer size).

Technically, because of the jet engine sized air movers, this config eats up FOUR slots, even though it's only in 2 of the PCIe slots. It's also going to drain more power than the Vegas strip; remember that each of these cards needs TWO dedicated power connectors from the power sup.Kguku wrote:Now the moaning about the 2 slots being used is pathetic. It's like bitching that a Jaguar engine takes up more space and consumes more gas than a Pinto engine. Sure, it takes a lot more power, but it gives a lot more performance.
If you can't afford the Jaguar, or the cost of gas to put in it, or a garage to put it in, buy an Accord.

if you were walking around and you came upon a tulip with tits, would you let it be for the rest of the world to enjoy.. or would you pick it and carry it off to a secluded area to motorboat them?

We all should be trying to conserve energy not waste it away buying HUGE power sucking video cards!pyrella wrote:It's like bitching that a Jaguar engine takes up more space and consumes more gas than a Pinto engine. Sure, it takes a lot more power, but it gives a lot more performance.

If everyone in the world bought one of these and had to pay and extra 2 cents a day in electricity it would cost the world an extra $100,000,000 a day over an ATI card and umpteen gigawatts of power tapping our natural resources! You'd need to build the equivalent of a nuclear power plant to make up for the power sucked out of the grid with these new monster cards.
You'd think they would have learned from the Voodoo card bloating but instead they hired on the same people to help bloat nVidia cards.

It's a pretty unrealistic scenario is my point. Have any sites figured out how much juice these bad boys draw?

I think this is more a look at the enormous potential PCIe embodies. I expect ATi may develop their own dual GPU configuration for those with unlimited budgets to take advantage of. The development of PCIe has virtually obsolesced the AGP slot (even at 8x) providing ~2x (~AGP 16x) the data transfer, while also being backwards compatible with current PCI devices. It makes experimenting in dual GPU reasonable again because you can place more than 1 PCIe slot on a motherboard and have no fear of it's being wasted by people who use only 1 video card, unlike AGP which can only be used by high-end video cards.
Dual GPU definitely is not an option that everyone will use, how many people can afford 2 $500 video cards? But PCIe is definitely something that will benefit everyone. I fully expect to see ATi, in keeping with recent tradition, provide not only a dual GPU solution, but one superior to nVidia.

I was just wondering if anyone knew what a single card draws.Aslanna wrote:I'd imagine it's what one of the cards draw... Multiplied by 2!
